"Hit it, Zubin!" Thus spake Zappa in Pauley Pavilion in 1970. Forty-three years later, this immortal injunction to Zubin Mehta at the premiere of Frank Zappa's "200 Motels" came back Wednesday night to haunt us. And taunt us. We think of the Los Angeles Philharmonic, once it moved into Walt Disney Concert Hall, as having become a uniquely relevant and risk-taking orchestra. After all, it celebrated the 10th anniversary of the opening of the hall on Wednesday with a staged production of the world premiere of what is being called Zappa's "200 Motels - The Suites.

Two convicted murderers who were released from a Florida prison using forged documents were captured Saturday night at a Panama City motel, authorities said. Joseph Jenkins and Charles Walker, both 34, were taken into custody without incident about 6:40 p.m. at the Coconut Grove Motor Inn, the Florida Department of Law Enforcement said. They were arrested a few hours after family members held a news conference to urge the men to turn themselves in. A woman who answered the phone at the motel told the Associated Press she saw police go into room 227. The woman, who didn't want to give her name, said authorities didn't stop by the office before moving in. Jenkins and Walker were serving life sentences at the Franklin Correctional Facility in Florida's Panhandle region, about 300 miles from Orange County, where they were convicted.

At Wednesday's 10th birthday party for Walt Disney Concert Hall, the Los Angeles Philharmonic will perform the world premiere of Frank Zappa's "200 Motels. " It's made up of 13 orchestral suites by the late L.A. rock star and composer, only parts of which surfaced in his 1971 "200 Motels" feature film and double-LP soundtrack album. Zappa, who died 20 years ago of cancer just short of 53, devoted much of his creative energy to humorous scoffing at most aspects of the human condition.

SEATTLE -- Three motels in nearby Tukwila served as dens of prostitution and drug dealing where police often had to respond to calls of robbery, drug dealing, theft and rape, authorities say. On Tuesday, U.S. Atty. Jenny A. Durkan announced that federal agents had seized and boarded up the motels after a yearlong investigation involving hundreds of law enforcement officers. "Today, we seek to hold the hotel owners accountable for their crimes, strip them of their criminal dens and make this area of the community safer," Durkan said in a prepared statement.
