Cal State Northridge soccer player Armando Valdivia was named the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation's player of the year in the Pacific Division, and Coach Marwan Ass'ad received coach of the year honors. Valdivia, a senior forward, led the MPSF in scoring with 54 points and posted MPSF highs in goals (17) and assists (20). He and Ass'ad led the Matadors to a second-place finish in the division and their first berth in the MPSF playoffs, where they will face Air Force on Friday.

Pepperdine eliminated defending national champion Stanford from the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation men's volleyball playoffs, avenging its elimination by the Cardinal last season. The third-ranked Waves beat the Cardinal, 12-15, 15-6, 15-3, 15-5, in the first round of the MPSF tournament Saturday night at Firestone Fieldhouse.

Valdivia led the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation in goals (17), assists (20) and points (54). He was also named the MPSF Pacific Divsion's most valuable player by league coaches. Valdivia's 54 points were the third-best for a single season in Northridge history.

The UC Irvine men's soccer team already has a record-tying number of victories and one more today in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation tournament would give the Anteaters a chance at a crowning achievement. Irvine (12-7-1) faces San Jose State (18-0-1) at 11 a.m. and Cal State Fullerton (14-4-1) plays Denver (9-5-2) at 2 p.m. in semifinal games at Cal State Fullerton. "We've worked so hard--11 years--to come play on the soccer field at UCLA," Ass'ad said. "I've envied the way UCLA played the past 11 years. They used to make us look bad. Although UC Irvine lost its Mountain Pacific Sports Federation men's volleyball match to host Loyola Marymount Wednesday, 15-13, 15-5, 9-15, 15-5, the Anteaters still clinched their first postseason bid in school history. Donnie Rafter had 26 kills and Mike Rupp had 23 kills and seven blocks for ninth-ranked Irvine (13-10, 10-8 in conference), which only needed to win one game to clinch a berth in the MPSF tournament.
