Shares of MRV Communications Inc., a Chatsworth-based maker of fiber optic equipment, rose the most in more than four years after its Source Photonics unit announced plans to raise as much as $130 million in an initial public offering. MRV advanced 44 cents, or 21%, to $2.50, the biggest gain since July 2003. The shares have fallen 29% this year. Source Photonics makes equipment that helps companies offer services such as streaming video and Internet calling.

MRV Communications Inc., a Chatsworth producer of electronic components, said its profit jumped to $560,000 last year from $189,000 in 1991. The higher earnings in the year ended Dec. 31 came on an 84% surge in sales, to $4.42 million from $2.40 million. The company, which issued its initial stock offering to the public in December, said the gains reflected the introductions of new products and stronger foreign sales.

MRV Communications Inc. posted record profits and revenues in its first quarter, which ended March 31. MRV's net income more than doubled to $4.3 million, up from $1.9 million in the same period a year earlier, while revenues rose 129% to $35.6 million, up from $15.5 million. The company attributed part of its strong results to continued sales to key customers Intel, Fujitsu and Digital Equipment.

The company posted a profit of $402,000 in the quarter that ended Sept. 30, more than double earnings of $173,000 reported a year earlier. Sales in the latest quarter totaled $4.73 million, compared to $1.92 million a year earlier. For its nine-month period, the company reported net income of $1.04 million on sales of $11.

MRV Communications, Chatsworth, has leased a 38,795 square foot headquarters for its Zuma Networks division in West Hills. The five-year lease is valued at $4.6 million for the new building on the former Hughes Aircraft site at 8383 Fallbrook Ave. The company plans a July move for the 180 Zuma employees. Delphi Business Properties, Van Nuys, represented MRV. Trammell Crow Co. represented the property owner.

MRV Communications Inc. in Chatsworth has announced a special shareholders meeting May 10 to approve a two-for-one stock split and an increase in authorized common stock from 80 million to 160 million shares. Assuming approval by the stockholders of the stock split and the increase in authorized common stock, the record date for the stock split will be May 11. Post-split trading is expected to commence May 29.

MRV Communications Inc. said it will buy Fiber Optic Communications Inc. of Taiwan for $263 million in stock and cash to expand in optical components. Chatsworth-based MRV, which makes routers, switches and other products that enhance the performance of telecommunications networks, also said it will take a $13.8-million charge to exit the local-area-network switching business. Fiber Optic Communications makes passive fiber-optic components, including couplers and isolators.
