Dancehall star Beenie Man, who has recorded anti-gay songs in the past, was yanked from a concert associated with the MTV Video Music Awards this weekend after gay groups planned a protest, the network said Wednesday. MTV pulled the Jamaican singer from the roster after South Florida gay activists announced plans to protest Saturday's concert in Miami over some of his past lyrics, including "Queers must be killed."

I was watching the "MTV Video Music Awards" on Channel 11 and was appalled by the number of times Eddie Murphy used profanity and was bleeped. My 10-year-old daughter was watching and even though Murphy was censored, she could figure out what he said. Punk-pop band Green Day captured eight nominations for "Boulevard of Broken Dreams" and "American Idiot" Monday to lead nominees for the MTV Video Music Awards. Rocker Gwen Stefani and rap artist Missy Elliott each won six nominations, and the Irish band U2 had five. The 22nd annual MTV awards will be broadcast from Miami on Aug. 28. Rapper Kanye West, "American Idol" winner Kelly Clarkson and Green Day are among the scheduled performers, MTV said in a news release.

Rap star Kanye West was named best hip-hop artist but still came off as a sore loser at the MTV Europe Music Awards. West apparently was so disappointed at not winning for best video that he crashed the stage Thursday in Copenhagen when the award was being presented to Justice and Simian for "We Are Your Friends." In a tirade riddled with expletives, West said he should have won the prize for his video "Touch the Sky" because it "cost a million dollars, Pamela Anderson was in it.

Rapper Missy Elliott, teen heartthrob Justin Timberlake, singer Beyonce Knowles and rapper 50 Cent were the big winners at the MTV Video Music Awards. Elliott took the evening's top honor, best video of the year, and also won best hip-hop video for her song "Work It." Knowles won best female video, best R&B video and best choreography while 50 Cent won for best rap video and best new artist.
