After unsuccessfully trying to buy rat poison to kill herself and her 2-year-old triplets, Miguellina Estevez, 19, shot each of her sons in the head with a semiautomatic pistol and then turned the gun on herself, police said. Her body was found in the second-floor bedroom of her Philadelphia row house, with two of her sons dead nearby. The third boy was declared brain dead and was on life support. Estevez came to the U.S. three years ago from the Dominican Republic with her boyfriend.

A divorced couple from two of Philadelphia's most prominent families had a confrontation in Haverford, Pa., that ended with the man shooting his ex-wife to death, then killing himself, police said. Mark Hampton Biddle, 49, an Ardmore lawyer who lived in St. Davids, was found dead outside the rear entrance of his former wife's suburban home with a .38-caliber revolver by his side, police said. He had shot himself in the head, police said.

A man shot and killed a 9-year-old boy, wounded his sister and then held police at bay for 12 hours before killing himself. Alan Waterhouse, 46, shot himself in the head after police twice lobbed tear gas into a Mount Pleasant, Pa., apartment and spent hours negotiating to resolve what they thought was a hostage situation. Police arrived after Waterhouse had fired shots from an apartment belonging to Cheryl Barnhart, whom he had dated. Police found Barnhart's son, Jeremy, dead in a bedroom.
