A gag order has been placed on criminal proceedings against four suspects charged in three kidnapings and murders of San Gabriel Valley residents. Citrus Municipal Judge Fred Felix, who on Sept. 5 sealed records in the so-called "mall murders" case, issued the new order Monday. Deputy Public Defender Lynn Storing, who represents defendant John Lewis, sought the order. Lewis, 21, and three others--Eileen Huber, 20; Vincent Hubbard, 26, and Robin Machuca, 26--return to court Sept.

A lawyer for the family of a West Covina man who was shot 28 times in the back and killed by police on Labor Day demanded Thursday that the Los Angeles County Grand Jury investigate. At a press conference, attorney Johnnie L. Cochran Jr. called the death of Darryl A. Stephens, 27, "an outrageous tragedy" and said the decision on whether to file criminal charges against the two West Covina SWAT team officers who killed Stephens should be made by citizens and not other police agencies.

With the rain pounding outside, Sandy John told his wife and young daughter to wait at the Lakewood Center Mall entrance while he went for the car. He never returned. John, 49, of Las Vegas was gunned down Friday in the mall's parking lot after refusing to turn over his car keys to two men, who later abandoned his black 1987 Cadillac Coupe de Ville nearby, stealing only its tires.
