The owners of a trendy jazz club claim in a civil-rights lawsuit that they are being harassed and discriminated against by their landlord because their club attracts many African-Americans. Randell Young, co-owner of Randell's, located on Hutton Centre Drive in Santa Ana, said he filed a lawsuit Monday in Los Angeles Superior Court after months of enduring harassment from Nansay USA, based in Santa Monica. Eric Yokeno, the owner of Nansay USA and Randell's landlord, declined to comment Tuesday.

A second group has asked the U.S. attorney general to initiate a civil rights investigation into allegations that a landlord and property managers have harassed the owners of a Santa Ana jazz club because it attracts a largely black clientele. The club's co-owner, Santa Ana mayoral candidate Randell Young, filed a civil lawsuit in July against the property managers, New York-based Cushman & Wakefield, as well as former landlord Nansay USA of Santa Monica and current landlord Orix Corp.

Los Angeles City Councilman Zev Yaroslavsky has announced the formation of the Westwood Village Management Corp. to oversee revitalization of the village. The seven-member volunteer board, which will hire an executive director, is fashioned after the management concept that turned around the once-depressed Third Street Promenade in Santa Monica.

Randell's jazz club and restaurant will close after a performance tonight by saxophonist Brandon Fields because of an ongoing dispute between club owner Randell Young and the owners of the building, Young said Friday. In a prepared statement, Young charged that the landlords have not fixed a number of problems in the building, such as a leaky ceiling, as part of "an extended campaign of harassment."

Blues guitarist, restaurateur and stockholders' rights activist Randell Young became the first announced candidate for mayor Thursday. Young called the City Council's unanimous vote to increase the utility tax to fund a new jail "the last straw" in his decision to shift from a full-time entrepreneur and musician to a candidate. "I'd rather not be a politician per se," Young, 39, said. Incumbent Mayor Daniel H. Young, who is no relation, has said he will not run for reelection in November.
