The Department of Homeland Security issued but recalled a 2007 intelligence analysis about the Nation of Islam after deciding the document dealing with the black Muslim group broke rules on intelligence activity in the United States, officials said Wednesday. Internal documents revealed that intelligence chiefs found analysts had "unintentionally and inadvertently" violated rules governing the collection, retention and distribution of information concerning "U.S. persons and organizations."

As the light turned red at the intersection of Crenshaw and Slauson, Brian Muhammad raised two pink pie boxes in his right hand and strolled up the sidewalk: "Bean pie! Bean pie!" Louis Farrakhan's Nation of Islam called for the nations of the world to atone for injustices in its rally today to commemorate the first anniversary of the Million Man March. "We intend to call upon all nations, all governments, to end injustice, to end exploitation, to end oppression, to end war, to end violence," said Benjamin F. Chavis Jr., former executive director of the NAACP. The march in New York near the U.N. is expected to draw 100,000 people.

Nation of Islam leader Louis Farrakhan said in a letter to followers that he is seriously ill, and he asked movement leaders to carry on in his absence to make sure the Nation of Islam "will live long after I and we have gone." Farrakhan, 73, said he began suffering pain this year similar to 1998, when he was diagnosed with prostate cancer and underwent surgery.

Khalid Abdul Muhammad, a former Nation of Islam official known for venomous attacks on Jews, whites and gays, suffered a stroke and was placed on life support in a hospital outside Atlanta, a spokesman for the Muslim group said. Nation of Islam chief spokesman James Muhammad, no relation to Khalid Muhammad, confirmed that the fiery black Muslim activist was near death at Wellstar Kennestone Hospital in Marietta, Ga.

Former NAACP head Benjamin F. Chavis Jr., a United Church of Christ minister and lead organizer of the Million Man March, has joined the Nation of Islam. Chavis, 49, announced his conversion before a cheering crowd at the group's annual Savior's Day festivities in Chicago. "This is not a political decision, it is not an economic decision, it is a spiritual decision," he said. Chavis was named executive director of the National Assn. for the Advancement of Colored People in 1993.

Calling today's organized religion a failure, the Nation of Islam's Minister Louis Farrakhan on Sunday urged a "new beginning" during the rededication ceremony for a renovated mosque on Chicago's South Side. Jabir Herbert Muhammad ran a bakery, a dry cleaner and other small businesses for the Nation of Islam before taking on his biggest project of all, boxer Muhammad Ali. Nation of Islam Minister Tony Muhammad and two of his security guards won't be charged with criminal battery for a scuffle last year with Los Angeles police officers, the city attorney announced Friday. Closing a case that had sparked tension between African American community leaders and the police, City Atty. Rocky Delgadillo rejected a request by Police Chief William J. Bratton to charge Muhammad with misdemeanor battery on a police officer.

Community activist Najee Ali and Nation of Islam minister Tony Muhammad said Wednesday they had resolved a dispute over Ali's contention that the minister's bodyguards beat him at a recent news conference. Muhammad said the pair met Tuesday with elders in the Muslim community after Nation of Islam leader Louis Farrakhan and prominent Muslim leader W.D. Mohammad, who is Ali's father-in-law, encouraged them to settle their differences and work together.
