New Image Industries Inc., a Canoga Park maker of dental intraoral cameras, has agreed to extend its agreement in principle to be acquired by Dentsply International Inc. of Des Plaines, Ill., to Oct. 3. New Image said the move is to give Dentsply time to complete its due diligence review of New Image. Dentsply, a supplier of dental, X-ray and mammography products, last month agreed to purchase New Image for $16.38 a share, or a total of $91.6 million.

If the notion of a tray full of gleaming dental instruments doesn't sound appetizing, you're probably not a dentist. Dentists like their instruments, and some are willing to spend a bundle for them. So when a warp-speed dental instrument called an intra-oral camera hit the market six years ago, industry experts predicted it would be a blockbuster.

New Image Industries Inc., a Canoga Park maker of intraoral cameras and other dental imaging devices, said it expects to break even in its fiscal second quarter ended Dec. 31 on revenue of about $8 million. In the same quarter a year earlier, New Image earned $1.42 million on $10.9 million in revenue.

New Image Industries Inc., a Canoga Park dental-equipment supplier, said it received its first order from Japan for 100 of its AcuCam intraoral cameras worth $413,800. The cameras, which permit dental patients to see problems with their teeth and gums on a video monitor, will be marketed in Japan by GC Dental. The latter is the largest and oldest Japanese distributor of dental products, New Image said.

New Image Industries Inc., in a major rebound, reported a first-quarter profit of $600,000, compared with a year-earlier loss of $2.44 million. In the three months that ended March 31, Canoga Park-based New Image said the latest earnings came on a surge in its revenue, to $4.55 million from $1.82 million a year earlier. New Image makes computerized equipment that enables dentists, architects and others to show customers "before" and "after" images of their services.

That's when the Canoga Park-based company plans to distribute all of the stock in Styles On Video to New Image shareholders of record Feb. 8. They will get one share of Styles On Video for every five New Image shares owned. New Image mainly markets imaging systems and cameras that enable dentists to provide "before" and "after" images of their services.

New Image Industries Inc. has agreed to acquire nearly all of the assets of Aerospace Optics, a privately held concern that makes New Image's main product under contract. Terms of the deal were not disclosed. New Image, based in Canoga Park, makes computerized imaging and video-camera equipment that enables dentists, architects and others to show clients "before" and "after" images of their services. New Image's main product is the AcuCam camera used by dentists.

New Image Industries, a Canoga Park manufacturer of dental imaging equipment, said it has signed a contract with a division of Loral Corp. to develop a digital sensor that could reduce patient exposure to X-rays. New Image said it has joined forces with Loral Fairchild Imaging Sensors, a division of defense electronics manufacturer Loral Corp., to produce the filmless X-ray system. The product will be marketed to dentists in general practice.

The company's revenue for the three months ended Dec. 31 rose 36%, to $10.9 million from $8.03 million. It said the results reflected growing demand from dentists for its products.

New Image Industries Inc., the Canoga Park-based developer of dental cameras, reported a loss of $1.61 million for its fourth fiscal quarter ended June 30, in contrast to earnings of $1.45 million in the same period a year earlier. Revenues for the quarter were $8.46 million, up 5% from $8.05 million the year before. For its fiscal year, New Image reported a loss of $347,000, in contrast to earnings of $5.61 million in fiscal 1994. The loss was on revenue of $31.6 million, up 3% from $30.
