New Image Industries, a Canoga Park manufacturer of dental imaging equipment, said it has signed a contract with a division of Loral Corp. to develop a digital sensor that could reduce patient exposure to X-rays. New Image said it has joined forces with Loral Fairchild Imaging Sensors, a division of defense electronics manufacturer Loral Corp., to produce the filmless X-ray system. The product will be marketed to dentists in general practice.

New Image Industries Inc., a maker of dental intraoral cameras and related imaging systems, reported a steep slide in its fiscal second-quarter earnings on lower revenue. The company blamed the profit and revenue declines on price cutting on its older imaging equipment to reduce inventory. In the three months ended Dec. 31, New Image earned $38,000, down 97% from its $1.42 million profit a year earlier. Its revenue fell 20%, to $8.71 million from $10.9 million.

New Image Industries Inc., a Canoga Park maker of dental cameras and imaging systems, said earnings for its first quarter, which ended Sept. 30, were $148,000, down 78% from $677,000 in the same period last year. The drop came on a 27% increase in revenue to $6.97 million from $5.47 million the previous year.

Shares of New Image Industries Inc., a Canoga Park-based maker of dental imaging devices, tumbled sharply last week after Dentsply International Inc. backed out of a deal to acquire New Image. Roger Leddington, chief executive of New Image, said the deal unraveled over "differences of opinion on certain issues," including New Image's chances for successfully defending a patent infringement lawsuit. Leddington said New Image is being sued by High Tech Medical Instrumentation Inc. of San Carlos.

New Image Industries Inc., a Canoga Park maker of dental intraoral cameras, has agreed to extend its agreement in principle to be acquired by Dentsply International Inc. of Des Plaines, Ill., to Oct. 3. New Image said the move is to give Dentsply time to complete its due diligence review of New Image. Dentsply, a supplier of dental, X-ray and mammography products, last month agreed to purchase New Image for $16.38 a share, or a total of $91.6 million.
