A season that began with Luke Eubank of Newbury Park being a rather anonymous right-handed pitcher ended Friday night under the lights at Dodger Stadium with Eubank being saluted as the teenager who helped deliver a Southern Section Division 1 championship. It was a vintage Eubank performance in a 2-1 victory over Corona. No walks. Eight strikeouts. Just three hits given up. He pitched his 11th complete game and improved his record to 11-0. And it took just 83 minutes. "That kid just carried us the whole way," Coach Matt Goldfield said.

Two teenagers thought to have run away from their homes in Thousand Oaks and described as possibly suicidal have been found "in good health," authorities said Friday. Kaylee Rebert, 14, and Nicholas Marino, 13, were found in Newbury Park about 3 p.m. Friday after someone reported seeing the pair, the Ventura County Sheriff's Department said. Deputies found them a short time later. The teens were not in any danger when they were found, the department said, adding that at this time there was "no crime associated with this incident.

The improbable playoff run for the Corona High baseball team has led to a trip to Dodger Stadium to play in the Southern Section Division 1 championship game. The Panthers (19-14), who began the playoffs as the fifth-place team from the Big VIII League and a lowly wild-card team, won their semifinal game against Valencia West Ranch, 2-1, on Tuesday at Blair Field in Long Beach. Senior right-hander Daniel Pena gave up six hits, struck out four and walked one. In five playoff games, Pena has been the winning pitcher in three games and has saved two. "He deserves a lot of credit," Coach Andy Wise said.

Luke Eubank threw his glove so high after striking out the final batter in the Southern Section Division 1 championship baseball game at Dodger Stadium that it seemed as if it were headed to the space station. His display of arm strength, aided by a burst of adrenaline, was another unexpected occurrence in a season full of surprises. He threw three no-hitters. He threw six shutouts. He had 11 complete-game victories. He gave up just 36 hits in 83 innings while compiling an 11-0 record and 1.01 earned-run average.

Quarterback Joe Borchard's 30-yard touchdown run and placekicker Ryan Geisler's 22-yard field goal, both in the fourth quarter, sparked Camarillo to a 27-20 victory over Newbury Park in a Marmonte League opener at Camarillo High on Friday. Borchard's score came on a sneak with 9 minutes 4 seconds left, giving Camarillo a 24-20 lead. Geisler's second field goal of the game with 2:16 left capped the scoring.

It was a Marmonte League revival meeting of sorts. Neither Camarillo nor Newbury Park has been a recent playoff participant in boys' soccer, but a well-played, scoreless tie Saturday in a Royal tournament quarterfinal sent a message that the drought may be over. Newbury Park (8-1) advanced to the semifinals by defeating the Scorpions (6-1-1) in a shootout, 4-3, on a sodden field at Royal High.

Luke Eubank works so fast and usually throws so few pitches that Newbury Park road games are ending in less than 90 minutes, leaving varsity players with nothing to do while waiting for their bus to arrive. Eubank, though, is perfectly content using his cellphone to listen to music or text his girlfriend. "Fortunately, he has unlimited texting," said a family friend. Newbury Park Coach Matt Goldfield is still trying to figure out what to make of Eubank's pitching dominance.

Newbury Park got more hits, played more effortlessly, and had a pitcher who gave up only one hit to the final 20 batters she faced. But Canyon got three hits among its first four batters, pushed across the only run it needed and scored a 1-0 quarterfinal upset Thursday of third-seeded Newbury Park in the Southern Section Division I softball playoffs.

Baseball coaches haven't lasted very long at Newbury Park in recent years, but Matt Goldfield sure earned himself some respect in guiding the Panthers to the Southern Section Division 1 championship. In his third year as coach after serving as an assistant, Goldfield believes in trusting his players. He says he didn't call a single pitch from the dugout all season, relying on catcher Colton Waltner and his pitchers to make the decisions on the field. "There's different ways to get things done," Goldfield said.

The Lancers haven't defeated Poly since 1982. Chris Leachman replaced Dylan Legarde as the Jackrabbits' starting quarterback last week and helped Poly break out of a prolonged offensive funk during a 31-0 victory against Long Beach Jordan.
