For years, a memorial sign that saluted the life of Officer Harvey "Hobbs" Griswold stood proudly at the California Highway Patrol station in Newhall, a reminder of a life cut short in a 1950 car crash. A fire that blackened 700 acres and threatened dozens of homes was fully contained Tuesday and expected to be extinguished by this afternoon, a Los Angeles County fire inspector said. No one was injured and no homes or businesses were evacuated due to the fire, which began just before 4 p.m. Monday near the 22000 block of Sierra Highway. Weary firefighters doused remaining embers in the fire-ravaged canyon east of Wildwood Canyon Road on Tuesday. About 425 firefighters were still battling the blaze--dubbed the Sierra fire--but some were expected to be released Tuesday night, said County Fire Inspector John Holt.

It has been a scary, and sometimes violent, few days at Newhall's Hart High School, culminating Tuesday when about half the student body stayed home because of a threatening post on a popular online community. First there were the fights along racial lines that broke out late last week. Then there was the message posted Monday on the MySpace website, proclaiming Tuesday as a "bring your weapons to school day" at Hart and other high schools in the district.
