The company develops new towns and master-planned communities; Valencia was its first such venture. Newhall Land owns 36,000 acres 30 miles north of Los Angeles.

Newhall Land & Farming Co., Valencia, said it plans to buy back 5.5 million partnership units, worth about $135 million, to boost the price of the units. The real estate investment trust's latest stock repurchase plan, plus another 884,446 units authorized for repurchase under a previous plan, together represent just over 20% of the company's outstanding units. The buyback program lasts until Dec. 31, 2000.

In its third attempt this year to boost its lackluster stock price, Newhall Land & Farming Co. on Thursday said it would expand its stock buyback program to purchase as much as 20% of its outstanding shares. Newhall Land, which developed Valencia in northern Los Angeles County, said it would finance the buyback by selling up to $175 million of its commercial property and tapping bank lines of credit.

Newhall Land & Farming Co. has won approval by the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors for its 1,711-home Westridge Golf Course Community. The plan includes apartments, condominiums, single-family and estate homes surrounding a Tournament Players Club championship golf course, an elementary school, and a neighborhood park and recreation center. Lot sales are to begin in late 2000, with the golf course expected to open the following year.

The Newhall Land & Farming Co. of Valencia declared a regular quarterly cash distribution of 10 cents per partnership unit, payable on June 14 to unit holders of record on June 4. Newhall has paid uninterrupted quarterly dividends and distributions for 63 years. This distribution represents the 254th consecutive payment. Newhall is a developer of new towns and master-planned communities, including Valencia.

Development giant Newhall Land & Farming Co., which built Magic Mountain in the early 1970s, is planning a 400-acre addition to the theme park that would include an attraction with a movie special-effects theme, a retail and entertainment complex, and hotels. The project, about four times the size of the existing park, has been under study for more than two years. Newhall Land hopes to complete planning for it in the coming year, spokeswoman Marlee Lauffer said.
