Herald-Leader to defend itself against libel allegations by Reggie Warford, a former assistant basketball coach at the University of Pittsburgh. In October of 1985, the newspaper published a series of articles on the recruiting of student athletes by major universities and colleges.

A judge dismissed a lawsuit filed by a shooting victim's family against the Courier-Journal over a front-page photo of the body. A mentally disturbed man killed Richard O. Barger and eight others and wounded 12 in a rampage with an assault rifle at a printing plant on Sept. 14. The rampage ended when the gunman killed himself.

Dwane Casey, Kentucky assistant basketball coach, gave "false and misleading information" to the National Collegiate Athletic Assn. concerning his recruiting of Chris Mills, the NCAA charges in 1 of the 17 allegations made public recently against the school's basketball program, according to the Louisville Courier-Journal.

Allen H. Neuharth surprised Tuesday's annual meeting of Gannett shareholders by announcing that he will step down as chief executive of the giant media company in favor of President John J. Curley, 47. Neuharth, 62, will stay on as chairman of Arlington, Va.-based Gannett, publisher of USA Today and 92 other daily newspapers with a combined circulation exceeding 6 million.
