Is the Romney campaign seeing Newt Gingrich in its rearview mirror in South Carolina? Mitt Romney's people say no. But how else to explain the conference call the campaign held Wednesday morning with the sole purpose of trashing the former House speaker? Former Sen. Jim Talent of Missouri and ex-Rep. Susan Molinari of New York, both Romney backers who served with Gingrich in the House, blasted him as a wobbly conservative and a bomb-throwing leader more interested in promoting himself than the party.

Former Republican presidential candidate Herman Cain endorsed Newt Gingrich for president Saturday night in what was billed as a surprise appearance by the retired pizza chain executive. “I hereby officially and enthusiastically endorse Newt Gingrich for president of the United States,” Cain said in a brief speech at the Palm Beach County GOP Party Lincoln Day Dinner in West Palm Beach, Fla. About a week ago, Cain addressed a gathering of Republicans in South Carolina and said he had held off from endorsing a candidate because he didn't want an endorsement to “split my support.” He said Saturday that the decision to back Gingrich had been in his heart for some time.

Newt Gingrich, projected to place no better than fourth in the New Hampshire GOP presidential primary, pledged Tuesday night that his campaign would go on. “This is step two of a long process,” Gingrich said. “This campaign is going to go on to South Carolina. And we're going to offer the American people something very different. We're going to offer them an opportunity to participate in very dramatic, very fundamental change in Washington, D.C., and we're going to prove that I both understand the principles and I understand the practice.” At the time of the speech, with two-thirds of the vote counted, Gingrich trailed Mitt Romney, Ron Paul and Jon Huntsman.

Newt Gingrich said Monday that Nancy Pelosi's threat to discuss what she learned about the former House speaker from a 1990s ethics investigation is “an early Christmas gift.” He may be right. Remember that chummy 2008 ad that featured Gingrich and Pelosi urging action on global warming? “We don't always see eye-to-eye, do we, Newt?” Pelosi said as the two sat side-by-side on a loveseat overlooking the U.S. Capitol building. “No,” Gingrich responded.

Newt Gingrich has won the Republican presidential primary in Georgia, according to the Associated Press. Georgia was a must-win state for Gingrich, who crafted a Southern state strategy in his long-shot effort to win the Republican presidential nomination. That strategy hinges on a win in Georgia, the state he represented for 20 years as a member of Congress. The primary was called based on exit polls, as precinct results had just started to come in. Seventy-six delegates are at stake in the Georgia primary, and Gingrich is unlikely to win all of them.

With the Iowa caucuses less than two weeks away and New Hampshire and South Carolina primaries right behind them, Newt Gingrich is bound for---Virginia. Gingrich will campaign in the state Wednesday and Thursday, even though its GOP presidential primary isn't until March. And therein lies the problem. The former House speaker has been struggling to amass enough signatures to get on the Virginia ballot before Thursday's deadline. He needs 10,000 - and at least 400 from every congressional district.
