Nick Holt , Washington's defensive coordinator, returns to the Coliseum on Saturday aiming for a repeat of last season's upset victory over USC. Holt served two stints at USC before leaving after the 2008 season to join Steve Sarkisian in Seattle. The pair combined to outcoach Pete Carroll and his staff during last season's 16-13 victory at Husky Stadium. After the game, USC offensive players said the Huskies were calling out the Trojans' plays before the ball was snapped.

San Francisco 49ers offensive coordinator Greg Roman is a finalist to replace Joe Paterno at Penn State, his agent said Monday. Mike Harrison told the AP by phone that Roman interviewed for the position in November and is on the "short list" to take over the embattled program, rocked in recent months by the sex-abuse scandal. Harrison said he expects to know soon whether Roman will be hired, but declined to offer further details, such as whether Roman would finish out the season with the playoff-bound NFC West champion 49ers (13-3)

With Matt Barkley enjoying a record-breaking season and Washington coming to the Coliseum sporting a porous pass defense, USC hopes to pick apart the Huskies. The No. 18 Trojans also will try to assert their rushing attack Saturday. USC had success running the ball against the Huskies last season, with since-departed tailback Allen Bradford rushing for 223 yards and two touchdowns in a 32-31 loss. Senior tailback Marc Tyler , sidelined last week against Colorado, said Thursday that his balky left shoulder was sound and that he was looking forward to playing against former Trojans assistants Steve Sarkisian and Nick Holt . Sarkisian, Washington's head coach, recruited Tyler for USC out of Westlake Village Oaks Christian High.

USC offensive coordinator Norm Chow is staying with the Trojans, but another member of the staff has his eye on a head coaching opportunity. Stanford quarterback Andrew Luck is the presumed No. 1 pick in the 2012 NFL draft. But he wouldn't be, apparently, if Washington Coach Steve Sarkisian were running an NFL team. "If I'm an NFL head coach, right now, I'd pick Matt Barkley ahead of Andrew Luck," Sarkisian said Monday. "I think he's playing at that high of a level. " USC Coach Lane Kiffin and Sarkisian emerged from their years as Trojans assistants with a shared love for hyperbole and gamesmanship.

Washington Coach Steve Sarkisian will be on the lookout for USC tailback Dillon Baxter during Saturday night's Pacific 10 Conference game at the Coliseum ? and that's fine with Baxter. Sarkisian, without prompting, said this week that he anticipated Trojans Coach Lane Kiffin would deploy the freshman in a larger role against the Huskies. Baxter has rushed for 148 yards in 30 carries and has five receptions for 25 yards. But the multiple-purpose threat who had a hand in 79 touchdowns as a quarterback, running back and receiver during his senior season at San Diego Mission Bay High has yet to reach the end zone.

Stanley Havili is staying humble. USC's senior fullback is coming off one of his best games, but he has not forgotten last season's debacle at Washington, where his third-quarter fumble cost the Trojans momentum and helped send them on their way to defeat. "Obviously, my turnover was a big problem," Havili said Tuesday as the Trojans began preparations for Saturday's Pacific 10 Conference game against the Huskies at the Coliseum. Havili's fumble wasn't the Trojans' only miscue in Seattle ?
