Gold Club owner Steve Kaplan bought protection from the Gambino crime family during the 1980s and met with boss John Gotti and Gotti's son at least once to talk about it, Kaplan's cousin testified Wednesday. Kaplan, on trial on charges of racketeering related to the Atlanta strip club, bought cars for a Gambino associate in exchange for the mob's protection of nightclubs he owned, said the cousin, David Alwais, who also identified himself as a former Gambino associate.

A letter purportedly sent by an ultra-fundamentalist group called the Army of God claimed responsibility Monday for the weekend bombing of a lesbian nightclub and last month's attack on an abortion clinic. Federal investigators said they were trying to determine whether the letter was legitimate. They were also checking into a telephone call made Sunday to the Gay Community Yellow Pages in which a caller claimed that a Los Angeles neo-Nazi organization bombed the nightclub.

The owner of one of the nation's most profitable strip clubs went on trial Monday, with federal prosecutors contending that he used the lure of sex to attract professional athletes and other celebrities while cheating customers to funnel cash to New York's Gambino crime family. Gold Club owner Steve Kaplan and six associates are charged with obstruction, credit card fraud, loan-sharking and other crimes.
