WEST, Texas -- Gov. Rick Perry on Thursday called for the prayers of all Americans as he described “a nightmare scenario” in this small town where a fertilizer plant explosion injured about 160 and killed an unknown number in a blast so powerful houses were knocked from foundations. Earlier Thursday, officials estimated that between five and 15 people had been killed, including first responders. But Perry said he "was not comfortable" releasing the number of dead as search and rescue operations were underway.

Despite surging cases of infections unresponsive to existing antibiotic drugs, the number of medications under development or receiving approval from the Food and Drug Administration is dwindling and remains "alarmingly low," a new report warns. Most concerning, according to the Infectious Disease Society of America , is the "near absence" of antibiotic candidate drugs capable of combating new strains of bacteria that are uniquely dangerous: These "gram-negative" bacteria are not only resistant to most available antibiotic drugs themselves, they can pass genetic materials on to other bacteria that make them impervious to existing medications as well.

ARLINGTON, Texas -- Josh Hamilton said he calls 'em as he sees 'em. "I speak the truth," Hamilton said. "I don't sugarcoat it. People can see through that. I don't want to take back anything I said. " However, at a news conference before his first game here as a member of the rival Angels, Hamilton came pretty close to taking back his spring training comment about the Dallas-Fort Worth area being a "football town. " Rangers fans, already grumbling after Hamilton did not give their team a chance to match the Angels' $125-million offer, did not care for Hamilton's description of their town.

The hypnotic pull of Brazilian director Kleber Mendonça Filho's remarkable, award-winning "Neighboring Sounds" - one of the strongest feature debuts of the last decade - is in its mysterious density of techniques. Set in seaside Recife on street of high-rises occupied by wealthy owners, well-off renters and the underclass that cleans for them, the film dips in and out of their lives and gender, race and socio-economic issues. There's the dissatisfied housewife who smokes pot, the sugar magnate's grandson who amiably oversees the patriarch's properties, the maid who likes to tryst in a day-vacated condo.

Emily Rapp is not one to sugarcoat hard truths, including the brutal diagnosis she and her husband received in January 2011 when they took their then-9-month-old son to a pediatric ophthalmologist because of concerns about developmental delays. Ronan, they were told, had Tay-Sachs disease, which was untreatable and always fatal, usually by age 3. How do you live with such a death sentence? In "The Still Point of the Turning World," Rapp describes forcing herself to think deeply about the unthinkable and adjust to a new reality as she steels herself for inevitable, devastating loss.

What if the black box in your new car becomes a tool to invade your privacy? What if, on the other hand, it winds up saving your life after an accident? Those are some of the questions being raised this week over black box data event recorders in cars. Privacy advocates worried on Thursday that the data could be misused. Safety advocates argued on Friday that a watered-down version of the recorders would slow safety innovations. In the former camp is the Electronic Frontier Foundation and this scenario: The friend you loaned your BMW to decides to create his own ultimate driving experience, and your insurance rises because of his 120 mph freeway jaunt.

As the scope of Christopher Jordan Dorner's ambitions sank in Thursday, thousands of police hunted him and waited, on edge, as he seemed determined to hunt them. At departments across the Southland, bulletproof vests and riot gear were strapped on, shotguns readied. Motorcycle cops rode inside the protective metal of squad cars. The joking morning chatter had been replaced by grim quiet. Their adversary was a linebacker-sized ex-cop with a multitude of firearms, military training and a seemingly bottomless grudge born when the LAPD fired him in 2009.

Kobe Bryant was in an unbelievably clipped mood. Or maybe it was fully believable, given the circumstances. He's under contract for one more season after this. He's still one championship behind Michael Jordan. It's almost impossible to get there when your team is 12th in the Western Conference in the final week of January. Ever the optimist, perhaps to a fault at times, he's refusing to cave in despite the walls of a $100-million payroll crumbling around him. He was asked Wednesday if this Lakers thing could still be turned around.
