Authorities have identified a man discovered shot to death in his car in North Hollywood, the Los Angeles County coroner's office said. The body of Daryoush Khorrami, 30, of Woodland Hills, was discovered last Tuesday night on Satsuma Avenue near Whipple Street, said Scott Carrier, spokesman for the county coroner's office.

Chatsworth center Eddie Miller said he was praying during the Chancellors' championship game against North Hollywood in the North Hollywood tournament on Friday night. The 6-foot-8 Miller was getting close shots, but missing almost everything. So while running up and down court, grabbing rebounds and setting picks, Chatsworth's big man was privately pleading for some divine intervention. His prayers were answered.

A suspected arson fire gutted a vacant North Hollywood home early Thursday, authorities said. The fire at 4721 N. Denny Ave. was believed to have started in the garage, and flames quickly spread throughout the home, City Fire Department spokesman Larry Ford said. No injuries were reported. More than 30 firefighters battled the 3:23 a.m. fire, dousing it within 25 minutes. The fire is being investigated by an arson team, Ford said.

A 17-year-old reputed gang member was fatally shot outside his North Hollywood apartment early Sunday, Los Angeles police said. Carlos Arias was discovered about 12:40 a.m. lying on the threshold of his apartment on Laurel Canyon Boulevard, near Valerio Street, Sgt. Ike Langsam said. The youth had been shot several times in the upper body and died at the scene. No arrests have been made and a motive has not been determined, Langsam said.

Amelia Earhart, who in 1932 became the first woman to fly the Atlantic solo, has deep roots in the San Fernando Valley. She mysteriously vanished over the Pacific Ocean in July 1937 while attempting to circle the world. Earhart, who was born 100 years ago today, came to the Valley in the 1920s, attended USC, flew Lockheed planes out of Burbank, married publisher George P. Putnam and moved to Toluca Lake, where she was a regular at Lakeside Golf Club.

A North Hollywood gang member was in critical condition Tuesday after being wounded in a drive-by shooting, Los Angeles police said. Baldoman Hernandez, 18, was walking with four other young men at 9 p.m. Monday in the 7200 block of Vineland Avenue when a dark car sped by and shots were fired from its window, Sgt. George McCormick said. Only Hernandez was wounded. The car, which had at least two people in it, sped away and no arrests were made.

North Hollywood High lost, 73-70, to Science Hill of Johnson City, Tenn., Wednesday night in a consolation game of the Great Alaska Classic basketball tournament in Anchorage, Alaska. Fantasia Johnson led the Huskies (1-2) with 19 points. Damon Ollie added 18 points and 11 rebounds and Arthur Lee scored 14. Jovann Johnson led Science Hill with 19 points. North Hollywood shot 53% from the field, compared with 54% for Science Hill. The Huskies outrebounded Science Hill, 27-23.
