An early-morning wall of fog near the top of Cajon Pass set off a series of chain-reaction crashes involving 66 vehicles Thursday, closing northbound Interstate 15 for more than five hours and leaving two dozen people injured. The crashes, 15 in all, caused five cars to burst into flames, left big-rig trucks scattered in the middle of the freeway and backed up Las Vegas-bound traffic for miles. The first accident occurred just after 6:30 a.m.

A man threatening to jump from an I-15 freeway bridge over the Santa Ana River created a monstrous traffic jam for more than three hours Friday night before he was taken into custody by the Riverside County Sheriff's Department. The weekend traffic nightmare began at 6 p.m., when the California Highway Patrol shut down the northbound side of the freeway and negotiators started talking to the potential leaper, who was not immediately identified. The snarl didn't begin breaking up until 9:30 p.m.

A mudslide closed the northbound lanes of the Golden State Freeway on Thursday, eliminating a major highway for holiday weekend travelers and forcing them onto a detour that in some cases added hours to already long drives. The two left lanes of the freeway at Fort Tejon Road north of California 138 were opened just after 3 p.m. Friday, said California Highway Patrol Officer Richard Perez.

A spokeswoman did not know the condition of the truck driver or whether anyone else was injured in the accident, which prompted the closure of all northbound lanes of Interstate 5 for almost two hours, beginning at 1:30 p.m.
