In the splintered world of high school, Courtney Aoki was someone remembered for blazing a path all her own. She favored red and black, and walked through the halls wearing cat ears. She carried a journal in which she would jot down poetry, and had a grasp of literature that stuck in her teacher's mind years later. And she enjoyed musicals - "Chicago" and "Rocky Horror Picture Show" were among her favorites. Her ambition was to one day be on stage, working as an actress. "She was on her way to do something great," said J.C. Marquez, her English teacher at Renaissance High School for the Arts, which she attended for two years.

The Norwalk-La Mirada Unified School District, stunned by the televising of a video showing students apparently smoking marijuana in class, has suspended the two alleged smokers and the three students responsible for the video. The Friday incident has created a media circus at Norwalk High School and bad publicity for the district, which suspended the students for five days each. "We did it to show what's going on in school," said Edgar Llamas, one of the students who shot the video.

A student filmed smoking in a Norwalk High School class admitted Monday that he was smoking marijuana in the video--not oregano, as he had originally claimed. Junior Erik Vasquez, 16, said he made up the story about smoking oregano because "I thought I was going to get in major trouble." He added that he participated in the video, which has been shown in newscasts all over the country, to call attention to a drug problem at the school.
