CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -- Hardly anyone has forgotten the busted and bloody nose Tyler Hansbrough got against Duke last season, and he knows it. On Halloween, that gave him the idea for the perfect college student's costume -- easy to pull off, yet witty and wry. He donned one of the three protective masks he wore after Gerald Henderson's forearm broke his nose last March, then ventured out amid the throngs of revelers on Franklin Street near campus...

Talk about a bad break. Well, two actually, both involving Alejandro Moreno's nose. That has kept the hard-working Chivas USA forward on the sidelines for the first two weekends of the Major Soccer League season. And it has kept him guessing as to when he might finally get into a game. "This is not fun, obviously. It's not what I would have wanted to have to go through in the beginning of my year," said Moreno, whose team took on the Vancouver Whitecaps on Saturday at a soggy Home Depot Center (see latimes.com for results)

? Lakers forward Ron Artest has been known to lose control of his temper, his past often linked to that fateful day when he went into the crowd and punched a fan more than six years ago near Detroit. He hasn't lost control in a game since joining the Lakers, though he certainly wasn't thrilled about being accidentally popped in the face Monday by Marc Gasol after stealing the ball from the Memphis Grizzlies center. Artest ran all the way to the other end of the court, took a knee and put his face in his hands.

Painting pinups on airplane nose cones, an art form that reached its zenith in World War II, is making a comeback at this Strategic Air Command base. A KC-135 Stratotanker sports a 1940s-era calendar pinup, a looker in a midriff and a miniskirt rippling in the breeze. Castle AFB officials say the painting is designed to instill pride in the crews that fly and maintain SAC aircraft, but some women's rights groups say they find the pinup art form offensive. Col. Richard Martin, commander of the 93rd Bombardment Wing at Castle, said today's aircraft pinups are not so scantily clad as those of the 1940s.

With one whack to the nose, Kobe Bryant gave Scott Brooks a first-hand look at what made the Thunder coach admire the Lakers star so much from afar. Brooks, like any NBA coach or player, has always gushed over Bryant's toughness, longevity, competitiveness and efficient footwork. Those qualities often cause the biggest nightmares for opposing teams when they try to stop the Lakers' star. But when he coached the Western Conference team in the 2012 NBA All-Star game, Brooks gained an extra sense of appreciation for it. Brooks saw varying images of Bryant that left him shaking his head as he processed it all. First, Brooks saw Miami guard Dwyane Wade deliver a hard foul that broke Bryant's nose.
