Dale Coogan, superintendent of the Ocean View Elementary School District since 1975, died Wednesday morning of cancer at Mission Hospital Regional Medical Center in Mission Viejo. Coogan, 58, had been diagnosed with the illness in December and had been on leave for the last 5 weeks. "This is a real sad day," said his administrative assistant, Gayle Wayne. "There are a lot of tears around here." A memorial service for Coogan is pending, Wayne said.

Washington Union has wanted competition for a long time. Thursday night, it found some--for a while. Fourth-seeded Ocean View hung with the top-seeded Panthers, ranked No. 6 in the state, for more than a half before Washington pulled away to a 66-44 victory in the Division III regional semifinal. "It was hard, but fun," Washington sophomore guard DeShawn Stevenson said. "We could have played better defense, though."

Ocean View took control early and finished strong in a 66-40 first-round victory over Santa Barbara in the Tournament of Champions Tuesday at Ocean View. The second-ranked Seahawks (1-0) outscored Santa Barbara, 24-9, in the first quarter and, 20-8, in the fourth. Matt Kiemle had 18 points and seven rebounds and Jason Martini added 15 points for Ocean View. The Seahawks advance to play Pasadena in the second round at 8:30 tonight. Bill Gibbons, baseball coach at Ocean View High School, will not be rehired next season, principal John Myers said Friday. Gibbons, who has been the head coach at Ocean View for 10 of the last 12 years, will be replaced by Steve Barrett, who has coached the freshman-sophomore team for the last two years. Gibbons, who took two years off from coaching to pursue a law degree, will remain at the school as a history teacher.

Five horses are entered in tonight's $17,000 Ocean View Handicap, but only two trainers are represented in the 300-yard race. Adan Farias will send out Point Break while Paul Jones has the rest of the field -- Chicky Do Run Run, Be Real Quick, Stel Corona and Miami Cartel. Owned by a partnership that includes Jones, Miami Cartel hasn't run since he finished third in a stakes at Fairplex Park on Sept. 14.

There's a new challenge in front of Kathy Ponce. Winning at Ocean View--again. Ponce hopes to restore credibility to a program that has had five coaches in four years. A graduate of Arizona State last year, Ponce became coach of her alma mater on March 31 after the resignation of Lisa Parra. "I definitely want to coach next year," said Ponce, who was a Times' All-Orange County player for three years, two as a first-teamer. "I'm definitely excited about the opportunity.

Jacky Williams' 15-foot jump shot with nine seconds left gave Tustin a two-point lead and the Tillers held on for a 47-45 victory over Ocean View in a Golden West League girls' basketball game Tuesday night at Ocean View. Ocean View (8-9, 1-2) had a chance to tie, but committed a turnover with two seconds left and the Tillers ran out the clock.

Ocean View rallied from a nine-point halftime deficit and defeated Anchorage (Alaska) East, 56-54, Friday in the second round of the Marina girls' basketball tournament at Marina. Ocean View, (10-1), ranked fifth in the county, trailed, 29-20, at the end of the first half, but outscored East (9-3), the third-ranked team in Alaska, 20-6, in the third quarter. Jennifer Tuiolosega scored 14 of her 27 points in the quarter. Sharon Shelton scored 10 points and grabbed nine rebounds for the Seahawks.

Anna Lembke had 20 points to help Ocean View beat Westminster, 61-51, in a Golden West League girls' basketball game Thursday at Westminster. Lembke, a 6-foot-1 junior forward, also had five steals and five rebounds for Ocean View (15-4, 4-0), which shared the league title last season with Westminster. Jennifer Tuiolosega had 18 points, eight rebounds and five assists for Ocean View. Westminster is 12-5, 3-1.
