Perched on the Pacific Ocean roughly midway between Los Angeles and San Francisco, Cambria is charming - full of local boutiques, not chain stores; fresh, inventive restaurants, no McDonald's in sight; art galleries, studios and a series of small-scale inns and B&Bs. Jordan and Stephanie Martinez planned to celebrate their one-month wedding anniversary with a night out at their favorite Thai restaurant. But what's a date without fishing? So first, they drove in from Alhambra for a little pole time at Belmont Veterans Memorial Pier in Long Beach. Carrying folding camp chairs and tackle boxes, the Martinezes joined a handful of lone fishermen and families staking out spots along the pier's metal railing and dropping their lines. From Vietnamese, Filipino, Mexican and African American backgrounds, they shared bait, admired each other's catches flopping around in plastic buckets of ice, and traded fish stories.

The sixth annual Gathering of the Community Gardens is Saturday at Ocean View Farms in Mar Vista, with live music, children's activities, a free lunch, tours of the garden's six acres of plots and informal workshops on seed saving, bio-intensive gardening and composting. Guests also will get a chance to see the renowned (and we do mean renowned) composting facility at the 35-year-old community garden. Ocean View Farms has what is easily the largest and most productive composting installation at any community garden in Southern California.
