But time--like a good Marine--marches on and now Oceanside is trying to refashion its downtown as a resort and entertainment center, with a beachfront hotel, museums, a 16-screen movie theater, restaurants and more.

This image-conscious, beachfront city is about to become an architectural mecca. A new civic center designed by Charles Moore is a pleasing and perplexing piece of work, the kind of place that should gain national attention. More importantly, the center's human scale, wit and strong ties to the surrounding streets should provide the fabric that the city's threadbare core needs so desperately.
