The John Steinbeck classic "Of Mice and Men" opens tonight at South Coast Repertory in Costa Mesa, on the eve of what would have been the author's 97th birthday. Had he lived, Steinbeck would have witnessed a respect for this work that continues to build more than 60 years after its first publication as a novella.
