NASA has released an amazing image of Saturn and its ghostly rings flanked by three of its fellow planets - Earth, Mars and Venus. The picture, nearly four months in the making, was taken by NASA's Cassini spacecraft when Saturn was backlighted by the sun. That made it possible for Cassini's cameras to look toward the center of the solar system without damaging its cameras. The portrait above is a mosaic of 141 wide-angle images taken by Cassini over a span of a little more than four hours.

All the amenities of modern medicine are available at a new West Los Angeles hospital. There's 24-hour emergency care, a team of surgeons, psychology and physical therapy units, MRI and CT machines, one of the top oncologists in the country. Medical assistants busily roam the halls, soothing patients' fears with smiles, kind words or gentle touches. But they have to watch out: The patients can bite. They're dogs, cats and other pets being treated at the VCA West Los Angeles Animal Hospital, which at 42,000 square feet is the largest pet hospital west of the Mississippi River.

U.S. cable television operators -- including Time Warner Cable and Cox Communications -- are allowing more customers access to the Filipino Channel in the wake of last week's devastating Typhoon Haiyan. The channel has been providing special coverage from the Philippines. News organizations are reporting that food and water is becoming scarce, and that rescue workers are scrambling to reach thousands of victims of the powerful storm. "To help Filipinos better connect to news and information about recovery efforts, Time Warner Cable and the Filipino Channel have agreed to make their network available at no additional cost to digital customers through Nov. 15," Time Warner Cable said Monday in a statement. PHOTOS: Cable versus broadcast ratings International Media Distribution, which distributes the channel, said at least 12 pay TV operators would offer their digital customers access to the Filipino Channel through Nov. 15. The list of providers also includes AT&T U-Verse, Bright House Networks, Comcast's Xfinity TV, Frontier Communications, Hawaiian Telcom, Verizon FiOS TV and Wave Broadband.

The whiteboard inside the Lakers' locker room spelled out the defensive plan in various shades of marker. Find Kevin Martin. Watch Kevin Love's outlet passes. Make Ricky Rubio a shooter and not a driver. Fail. Fail. Fail. At least the Lakers were consistent. In a performance so appalling they were booed in the first quarter, the Lakers reached a new low Sunday night at Staples Center during a laughably lopsided 113-90 loss to the Minnesota Timberwolves. The Dodgers are open to trading one of their three veteran outfielders? If I were any more shocked I'd be Capt. Renault shutting down Rick's Cafe Americain. Of course they are. Why wouldn't they be? They'd better be. Which is not the same as saying they are actively trying to move Matt Kemp, Andre Ethier or Carl Crawford, but General Manager Ned Colletti would not be doing his job if he weren't at least open to the idea. It's pretty simple math. The Dodgers have four outfielders all making a heap of money and can play only three at a time.

The new Melrose Avenue storefront is a man's world, make no mistake. The theme could not be stated more bluntly. Above the front desk: the rusted front end of a 1953 Chevy pickup. Along one wall: a vintage sign whose faded red letters read AUTO. Scotch is ready to pour, pending a liquor license. The lights are dim, the leather chairs deep. This place calls itself the first man cave for … manicures. Its name is Hammer & Nails . It will welcome the hairy-chested public starting Saturday.

Wal-Mart Stores Inc. says a "technical error" caused its website to offer absurdly low pricing Wednesday morning, touching off a buying frenzy. Many products were more than 90% off their list price, with televisions and computer monitors going for $8, video games for $18, treadmills for $33. Word of the deals quickly spread on social media. "Spent $300 on $5800 (retail pricing) of product on the Walmart ordeal. Hopefully it goes through. If not, it was worth a try!" Twitter user @samzorzSH wrote.

Amazon.com wants to help out the corner bookstore. The Seattle Internet giant on Wedneday introduced Amazon Source , a program that enables independent booksellers to earn money from the sale of Kindle e-books -- if they sell Kindle devices and accessores in their stores. A participating retailer can receive 10% of all revenue from Kindle e-books purchased on Kindle devices sold by the store for the first two years after a customer buys the device. PHOTOS: Apple's new Mavericks OS X: Top 10 features to check out Russ Grandinetti, vice president of Amazon Kindle, said the program meant customers no longer had to choose between e-books and their neighborhood bookstore. "Many customers want to read both digital and print books,” he said.
