They are called "student success fees" and they offer the promise of more classes and programs and improved graduation rates for thousands of California State University students. But critics say they are a thinly veiled attempt to shift more education costs to students - without increasing tuition. Campuses in Fullerton, Dominguez Hills, Fresno and San Diego all are considering these charges, ranging from $200 to $500 per semester. If approved, those Cal State campuses will join others in the East Bay, Long Beach, Los Angeles, Northridge, Pomona, San Bernardino, San Jose, San Luis Obispo and San Marcos, which already are charging such fees.

The gluten-free crowd has spoken, and it wants pizza. It's not hard to find gluten-free crusts these days, usually for a surcharge. What's more elusive is a pizza that's suitable for those with celiac disease - people for whom just a dusting of ambient wheat flour can mean painful illness. As Jennifer Harvey, food specialist for MOD Pizza put it: "The gluten-free movement has gotten so big. It's no longer a niche. " 800 Degrees Neapolitan Pizzeria: Originally sold a few gluten-free crusts a day, now it's 5% of the business.

Tom Capizzi is going to Hollywood Sunday night for the 86th Academy Awards, but not in a limo or a tux. Instead, he will be protesting near the Dolby Theatre, hoisting a green sign saying "Chase Talent Not Subsidies. " Capizzi will be among hundreds of visual effects workers staging a pre-Oscar rally, hoping to bring attention to the plight of rank-and-file entertainment industry workers who have been hard hit by the flight of film and TV jobs to other states and countries offering rich incentives.

Jos. A. Bank Clothiers Inc. rejected Men's Wearhouse latest acquisition offer late Thursday, calling it "inadequate" but agreed to meet with its rival to discuss a possible merger, heightening a months-long takeover battle between the retailers.  Since September, the two menswear companies have been engaged in an elaborate cat-and-mouse game. Jos. A. Bank Clothiers Inc. initially offered to buy Men's Wearhouse but was rebuffed. Men's Wearhouse turned the tables and offered to buy Jos. A. Bank, kicking off more expensive acquisition offers and a series of maneuvers (a lawsuit and a proposed deal by Jos. A. Bank to buy Eddie Bauer, another retail firm)

Tia Smith clutched her new phone in one hand and a phone case in the other as she shopped at a West Hollywood Best Buy. She clicked away into her smartphone's tiny screen and searched for the case in other nearby stores. "I'm trying to buy this Otter phone case for my new phone," she said. "But I'm trying to see if Target or Wal-Mart has it for cheaper so they can honor the price match," she said, as she scrolled through Target's mobile site on her new phone. As more people turn to their smartphones and tablets when they're thinking about making a purchase, retailers and marketing companies are rushing to figure out ways to transform these mobile browsers into buyers.

For the next week, customers who buy an Apple TV at one of the tech giant's retail stores will reportedly receive a $25 iTunes gift card as part of a promotion that could signal a new Apple TV is on its way. Apple news website 9to5Mac reported that Apple informed its retail employees about the promotion Friday morning. The bonus of a $25 gift card will be available to customers who buy a $99 Apple TV at an Apple Store between now and March 5, the report said. In the world of tech, discounts and promotions can often be signs that a newer version of a product will soon be rolled out. The state of California issued an advisory on measles last week. Though only about a dozen cases have been reported so far, many more people have been exposed to the virus. In the Bay Area, thousands were warned to watch for signs of the disease after a man who'd been infected on a trip to Asia rode a BART train. In Los Angeles, far more people than necessary were exposed to measles because doctors failed to report two patients' cases immediately. One had traveled to Asia; the other had been exposed to a recently infected traveler.

As Disney's first animated film to arrive in theaters since "Frozen," "The Pirate Fairy" will and should be scrutinized to see whether the refreshing feminism in the Oscar-nominated fairy tale represents a fluke or a new direction for the studio. So far, so muddled. "The Pirate Fairy" features an enormously likable protagonist in Zarina (voiced by Christina Hendricks), the would-be Marie Curie of pixie dust, if only her scientific curiosity were encouraged. When her forbidden experiments go awry, Zarina is forced into exile.

When I appear at the fence of the Glendale homeless shelter with my rolling suitcase, I hear cries of "It's the book lady" or, if I'm with my daughter, "It's the book ladies; let them in!" At that point, we are allowed to cut to the front of the line and pass through the gate without being wanded or searched. We then head for a table in the hall where we empty our suitcase and spread out our books. Since I'm on the board of the Friends of the Glendale Public Library, I collect most of the books I bring from the red-dot, super-sale bookshelf at the library.
