There's more to Oktoberfest than sausages and suds. Stuff like couscous, rabbit tagine, and lamb mechoui , for example. Farid Zadi, chef and owner of Spanish Fly Gastropub is holding his second annual Couscousfest/Oktoberfest celebration Saturday and Sunday, featuring North African street food, Algerian cold drinks and craft beers. “The first annual Couscous Festival in Pasadena was a bit nerve-racking, since we didn't really know what to expect in terms of crowd turnout or appetite for more exotic North African dishes,” Zadi wrote in a press release.

Jolly Al Srnka stood before the members of the Garden Grove City Council, lederhosen on his slender frame, a pleading look on his face and a tone of heartfelt entreaty in his voice. "How can we have an Oktoberfest without beer?" asked the 60-year-old Al, whose full name is Alfred S. Srnka but who goes by Al as leader of Jolly Al's German Band. "An Oktoberfest without beer is like . . . Thanksgiving without a turkey!"

It was the best of times, it was the wurst of times--at the ninth annual Oktoberfest in Thousand Oaks on Sunday, where more than 800 pounds of the German sausage was consumed along with kettles of sauerkraut. Monika Holderied of Camarillo knew all about the pickled cabbage. She cooked it. "We spent 18 hours making 360 pounds of sauerkraut yesterday," said Holderied, dressed in a Festtracht Miesbacher-- a colorful party dress from the German town of Miesbach.

By the time Munich's traditional Oktoberfest ends Sunday evening, it seems clear that it will be one of the driest--as well as the wettest--on record. The weather has been perfect: dry, warm days after a rainy summer. And the warm weather is prompting Oktoberfest beer drinkers toward what is expected to be an all-time consumption record: more than 5 million liters of what many regard as the world's best beers.

There probably will be more foamy steins held aloft in Munich than in Southern California to celebrate Oktoberfest, but the Southland will certainly be no stranger to the festival's exuberant spirit. Oktoberfest, that seasonal celebration of bratwurst, beer and German bands, is in full swing though Nov. 8 at Old World Village in Huntington Beach. The highlight--German Reunification Day, commemorating the reunification of East and West Germany--is slated for Wednesday, Oct. 7, from 6:30 to 11 p.m.; free food, prepared by members of the German Crusader Church, will be given to the first 500 people.

In Munich our tour bus let us off at the Oktoberfest before checking us into our hotel. The Oktoberfest turned out to be no more than a huge carnival whose main purpose was the gross consumption of Bavarian beer. We walked past what seemed half a mile of insane rides, sideshows and fast-food stands at which sausages, ice cream, roasted chicken and pretzels were being sold by the ton.
