The call Cal State Northridge men's volleyball coaches wanted to make and Oliver Heitmann wanted to take finally occurred Friday night--or Saturday morning in Hamburg, Germany. Heitmann, a starter on the German National Team, was told to catch the next available flight to Los Angeles. He was officially accepted for admission by Northridge officials Friday. Coach John Price said Heitmann could make his debut in the Matadors' next match, a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation opener at USC on Feb.

Cal State Northridge expects formal approval on the enrollment of a volleyball player whose presence will greatly enhance the Matadors' chances of returning to the NCAA Final Four. Oliver Heitmann, a 6-foot-7 middle blocker, said Thursday from Hamburg, Germany, that he is awaiting written notification that Northridge has admitted him for the spring semester. Sources at the school have indicated to Heitmann that university administrators have given their verbal approval.

Craig Hewitt had 31 kills and five blocks and Oliver Heitmann added 24 kills and eight blocks to lead the Cal State Northridge men's volleyball team to a 15-13, 10-15, 15-6, 15-12 victory at Loyola Marymount in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation match Tuesday night. The Matadors (10-7, 6-5) also got 17 kills and six blocks from Jason Hughes. The Lions fell to 5-12, 4-7.

Dawn Burton, a diver, and volleyball player Oliver Heitmann have been selected Matador Athletes of the Month for February by the Cal State Northridge Student-Athlete Congress, which consists of student-athletes representing each of Northridge's 18 sports. In addition, the Northridge Student-Athlete Congress belatedly named basketball players Andre Chevalier and Shannon Crouse Matador Athletes of the Month for the December 1993/January 1994 competition period which was interrupted by the Jan.

Peter Piexoto had 14 kills and Oliver Heitmann added seven as Cal State Northridge defeated UC San Diego, 15-5, 15-8, 15-3, in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation men's volleyball match Friday night. The victory was the fourth in a row for the Matadors (14-8, 10-6 in conference play) and their sixth in the last seven matches. Piexoto, a junior outside hitter from Soquel High near Santa Cruz, had a .571 hitting percentage, with Heitmann at .636 and Jason Hughes (six kills) at .556.

Jon Baer had a career-high 36 kills as sixth-ranked Cal State Northridge swept eighth-ranked Ball State, 15-13, 15-13, 15-8, in the first round of the Long Beach State volleyball tournament Friday at the Pyramid. The senior middle blocker hit .397 with five digs, five assisted blocks and two solo blocks. Outside hitter Jason Hughes had 16 kills and middle blocker Oliver Heitmann added 15 kills with a .464 hitting percentage for the Matadors (10-5), who play Indiana-Purdue Ft.

The American Volleyball Coaches Assn. named Cal State Northridge middle blocker Oliver Heitmann an NCAA Division I second-team All-American on Thursday. Heitmann is a 6-foot-7 junior from Hamburg, Germany. Forty players were nominated for the All-American teams. UCLA and Stanford each had three players on the first or second team. Gene Urcan, a sophomore from Chatsworth High, has left the Cal State Northridge volleyball team, Coach John Price said Friday. Urcan, the Matadors' top backup at middle blocker and opposite hitter, was not happy with his role, according to his coach. Urcan was set to start at middle blocker alongside Craig Hewitt before the arrival of Oliver Heitmann, a member of the German national team.

Cal State Northridge got no respect in the preseason men's volleyball rankings, but the Matadors earned some Tuesday night by defeating third-ranked Cal State Long Beach, 15-10, 13-15, 15-7, 7-15, 15-11, in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation match. Northridge, unranked in the coaches' national preseason poll, went into the game ranked eighth. "They put us in the 'teams to watch' category," CSUN Coach John Price said. "We get dogged every year at the beginning. I'm getting a little tired of it."
