The Houston Astros have exercised the 2012 option on the contract of Manager Brad Mills and added a club option for 2013. The Astros went 76-86 in Mills' first year as manager, including a terrible 17-34 start. But Houston went 59-52 after June 1 with a lineup that routinely included four rookies ? and without Roy Oswalt ( Phillies) or Lance Berkman (Yankees), who left in trades. General Manager Ed Wade said Friday that Mills has every quality needed to be a successful manager.

Logan White , Dodgers assistant general manager, will interview for the New York Mets' vacant general manager's post, according to a baseball source who spoke on the condition of anonymity because of the sensitive nature of the discussion. White will be with the Dodgers next season in his present role if he isn't hired by the Mets. With his current two-year contract set to expire this year, White has reached an agreement with the Dodgers on terms of a new deal. The job interview will be the second of the year for White, who was also a candidate for the Arizona Diamondbacks position that went to Kevin Towers . White was also interviewed by the Houston Astros in 2007.

The week ahead Dodgers: The New York Mets executed one of the ugliest collapses in baseball history last September, coughing up a seven-game lead with 17 games to play. The Dodgers did not distinguish themselves either, losing 11 of their last 14 games to fall from 3 1/2 games out of first place to eight. The Mets and Dodgers have the highest payrolls in the National League, the Mets at $138 million and the Dodgers at $119 million, and another underachieving summer could leave the general managers -- Omar Minaya for the Mets, Ned Colletti for the Dodgers -- looking for work.

A day after ending their second straight losing season, the New York Mets fired manager Jerry Manuel and general manager Omar Minaya , actions that had been widely expected. After starting the season with a $133-million payroll, fifth-highest in baseball, the Mets finished 79-83, 18 games behind Philadelphia in the NL East. There have been no playoff games in Queens since the Mets fell one game short of going to the World Series in 2006. "The last four years have been the most painful to me," team owner Fred Wilpon said, "and probably the most disappointing in what is over 30 years" as owner.

NEW YORK -- Willie Randolph kept his job -- for now. Meanwhile, the New York Mets kept losing. After their embattled manager had a much-anticipated meeting with ownership Monday, the Mets got another ineffective outing from Mike Pelfrey and fizzled on offense after a strong start in a 7-3 loss to the Florida Marlins. "A lot of stuff was taken care of," Randolph said, describing his entire day. "Now, we move on and try to win some ballgames."

On the day Carlos Beltran returned to the lineup, the New York Mets got another bad break. The Mets learned that catcher Mike Piazza would sit out an undetermined number of games because of a broken bone in his left hand. The injury happened when Piazza was hit by a foul tip during the Mets' 6-2 victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates on Tuesday. Piazza caught one more inning before leaving because of the pain. He had X-rays taken Wednesday that revealed the injury.

New York Mets Manager Willie Randolph will be back with the club next season, hanging on to his job after New York's monumental collapse. General Manager Omar Minaya made the announcement Tuesday, ending speculation that Randolph might be fired despite signing a contract extension before this season.
