There's a lot more than pixie dust swirling through the air at the Disneyland resort as construction crews, excavators and towering cranes work on several new theme-park rides set to debut this summer and beyond. The tandem Anaheim theme parks haven't seen this much construction since Disney California Adventure opened in 2001 next door to Disneyland. The elaborate dark ride will take visitors on a family-friendly musical underwater journey based on "The Little Mermaid" animated movie.

“The Great Gatsby's” leading man, Leonardo DiCaprio, is using his current screen sway for environmental good -- again. Together with Christie's next week, DiCaprio will co-host “the most important environmental charity ever staged,” the auction house's Brett Gorvy said in a statement. The 11th Hour charity auction, to be held in New York Monday evening, will benefit environmental and wildlife conservation efforts supported by the now 15-year-old Leonardo DiCaprio Foundation.

Chris Brown and violence have crossed paths yet again, this time with performer Frank Ocean in the mix as well. The incident reportedly happened Sunday night outside Westlake Studio on Santa Monica Boulevard. "got jumped by chris and a couple guys. lol. i only wish everest was there," Ocean tweeted late Sunday, referencing his dog, Everest. "cut my finger now I can't play w two hands at the grammys. " According to TMZ sources, however, Brown wasn't the one who started it. When Brown, who'd been listening to another artist, went to leave the studio, Ocean and his people blocked him in, the website's sources said.

The waves at Malibu State Beach crest at about 3 feet and the sun cuts through the morning haze as former world surfing champion Shaun Tomson rides the last swell to shore. It's been nearly 30 years since he won a world title, but Tomson wows the 50 or so surfers in the water with his sharp cutbacks and slicing U-turns. In the parking lot afterward, he changes out of his wetsuit. A lanky teenager in a bucket hat steps up and introduces himself.

KCET-TV pushes into its second year of independence from PBS with a new headquarters, a new slogan and new pledges about the thoughtful and provocative shows it will produce about Southern California. "Where the story really gets good," the fresh tag line declares. Management hopes it also applies to KCET's attempts to go it alone as one of the nation's handful of independent public television stations. Chief Executive Al Jerome said in a recent interview that KCET was making "really good progress" in its three-year plan to create a winning destination without public TV name brands such as "Sesame Street," "NewsHour" and the hit"Downton Abbey.
