After years of getting by without a car or affordable public transportation in the vast, unincorporated expanse of freeways and modest neighborhoods that make up East L.A., here at last was a ride.

Residents looking to make a dash to the county library, East Los Angeles College, or the Commerce Shopping Center without getting into their cars can take advantage of a full day of free shuttle bus rides today. The three-route service, covering 127 stops, marks a daylong celebration at the East Los Angeles Civic Center for the new East Los Angeles Shuttle Service, scheduled to begin Monday. The service will employ three shuttle buses Monday through Saturday in East Los Angeles.
