When one brother plays in the NBA and another brother plays professionally in Japan, it's a big advantage. Brothers Isaac and Daniel Hamilton of Bellflower St. John Bosco spent last summer learning from their older brothers Jordan and Gary, and their improvement can be seen every time they're on the basketball court. Isaac, a 6-foot-5 junior, scored 37 points and Daniel, a 6-6 sophomore, scored 23 points for St. John Bosco, which held off Orange Lutheran, 80-73, on Wednesday night in a Trinity League game.

Cory Thomson scored three touchdowns and Santa Margarita's defense forced five turnovers in a 27-15 victory over Orange Lutheran in a Trinity League opener Friday night at Orange Coast College in Costa Mesa. It was an emotional game for the Eagles (5-1), playing for the first time since Coach Harry Welch had surgery for prostate cancer Oct. 4. He was back on the sideline Friday and his team needed every bit of his football wisdom to beat a determined opponent that had won its previous three meetings against Santa Margarita by an average of 17.6 points.

Orange Lutheran's 28-25 victory over No. 15 Santa Ana Mater Dei Friday at Orange Coast College marked five consecutive wins over its Trinity League rival. And it wasn't decided until the final moments. After both teams traded two timeouts with 19 seconds remaining, Orange Lutheran quarterback Mike Markovsky connected with wide receiver Brandon Turner on a six-yard, fourth-down touchdown pass. He then found Gabe York in the end zone for the two-point conversion.

A year ago, future first-round draft pick Tyler Matzek of Mission Viejo Capistrano Valley pitched and hit his team to the Southern Section Division 1 baseball championship. With the playoffs beginning Tuesday, the question is, "Who will be this year's Tyler Matzek?" Orange Lutheran (21-5) was awarded the No. 1 seeding in the pairings released Monday. Simi Valley Royal (22-6) is No. 2, Lakewood (26-5) is No.3 and Huntington Beach Edison (18-8) is No. 4. All have stumbled at times, but Orange Lutheran's success in winning the tough Trinity League propelled the Lancers into the top seeding.

Godin's 100 time was the third-fastest in the nation this season. He also ran the 200 meters in 21.03, finishing second to Paul Lucas of Mountain Pointe, AZ, who clocked a national-leading 20.84. Godin's time was the third fastest in the nation this year and sixth-fastest in meet history.  It's only the second week of the track and field season, and St. John Bosco junior shot putter Matt Katnik and Mater Dei senior sprinter Curtis Godin have a lot to be excited about. At the South County Classic on Friday at San Clemente, Katnik set a school record with a mark of 61 feet, 11 1/2 inches. Katnik, who was offered a scholarship by Stanford in track and field, is St. John Bosco's 6-foot-4, 300-pound standout offensive lineman. But the shot put is the event where he could be making lots of noise this season.
