Call it perfect timing in the era of BBCOR bats. Top-seeded Orange Lutheran has put together a baseball team that relies on pitching, defense, bunting and finding ways to score without the aid of a home run. It has led the Lancers (23-4) into the quarterfinals of the Southern Section Division 1 playoffs after a 7-2 win over Vista Murrieta in a second-round game Tuesday at Hart Park. Six of their 10 hits Tuesday were infield singles. Conner Sullivan, who had three singles, started the game sliding into first base to beat out a ball that pitcher Jeff Moberg couldn't handle.

Gamer. Focused. Clutch. Those are the words that best describe Ty Moore of Santa Ana Mater Dei, a UCLA baseball signee who thrives in pressure-filled situations. As a sophomore, he was part of Mater Dei's perfect game in the 2010 Southern Section Division 1 championship game against Dana Hills, retiring the final six batters in a 2-0 victory. On Wednesday night, in a game matching the No. 1-ranked Monarchs against No. 2 Orange Lutheran under dark clouds and an occasional drizzle, Moore scored the game's only run on a Jeremy Martinez single in the sixth inning and finished with a four-hitter in a 1-0 victory at Hart Park.

Cody Nulph is having fun again. You can see it in his smile and sense it when he shares a high-five with teammates. The Orange Lutheran shortstop is experiencing an MVP-like senior season. On Tuesday, he had a triple and two singles and turned in his usual strong defensive performance in the Lancers' 8-2 Trinity League victory over Anaheim Servite. Lutheran is off to a 6-0 start in league play. "It's real big for us," Nulph said. Nulph is a four-year starter who began his high school career trying to overcome a gut-wrenching tragedy.

When one brother plays in the NBA and another brother plays professionally in Japan, it's a big advantage. Brothers Isaac and Daniel Hamilton of Bellflower St. John Bosco spent last summer learning from their older brothers Jordan and Gary, and their improvement can be seen every time they're on the basketball court. Isaac, a 6-foot-5 junior, scored 37 points and Daniel, a 6-6 sophomore, scored 23 points for St. John Bosco, which held off Orange Lutheran, 80-73, on Wednesday night in a Trinity League game.
