DURHAM, Ore. - Oregon officials voted unanimously Friday to jettison the state's disastrous health insurance exchange and switch to the federal system, admitting disappointment and defeat in an arena where the state had been a trailblazer. With its 7-0 vote, the board of directors for Cover Oregon acknowledged that the state exchange was too expensive and too troubled to fix. Although the state has spent an estimated $248 million to get the operation up and running, it never enrolled a single private insurance customer online.

Some things were settled by halftime Sunday. UCLA was not going to repeat as Pac-12 champion. Arizona clinched the conference regular-season title while the Bruins were sorting out issues in the locker room. Some things were unsettling by halftime. BOX SCORE: UCLA 74, Oregon State 69 Steve Alford, UCLA's always dapper-looking coach, ditched his jacket. That he didn't consider replacing it with a straitjacket was to his credit. In the first half the Bruins showed why they've lagged so far behind Arizona in the standings.

Gamblers in Las Vegas flocked to bet on Oregon State when sports books listed UCLA as more than a 10-point favorite, resulting in a substantial dip in the point spread. Unbeaten UCLA (3-0), which will play Oregon State at the Rose Bowl on Saturday, stands as a seven-point favorite at the multi-property MGM Resorts sports book and at the LVH casino. “The sharp bettors think highly of Oregon State,” said Jay Rood, director of MGM Resorts' book. “It's all sharp money now.” While dramatic point-spread moves can sometimes alarm bookmakers, Rood said since the heavy betting is coming on Oregon State to win following a similar pattern in the Beavers' upset of Wisconsin this month, he does not suspect anything sinister.

Oregon State's fairy tale season hit a possible dam break Monday when it was revealed starting quarterback Sean Mannion would be lost for an indefinite period of time because of a knee injury. Mannion has completed 63% of his passes this season for 1,358 yards and seven touchdowns. Oregon State has been this year's biggest surprise, rebounding from a 3-9 season with a 4-0 start that has landed the school at No. 10 in this week's Associated Press poll. Mannion played the entire game Saturday in Oregon State's 19-6 win over Washington State but was intercepted three times.

No one had told James Keefe the whole story, so it took a few moments for the UCLA forward to grasp the ramifications. When the Bruins played at Oregon State on Friday night, they were facing a team coached by Craig Robinson, who also happens to be President-elect Barack Obama's brother-in-law. "So we don't have the U.S. rooting for us?" Keefe asked. At least not 53% of the United States. And hardly anyone inside Oregon State's aging Gill Coliseum.

It was late Thursday night when UCLA's short-handed basketball team finally succumbed to Oregon in double overtime, 87-83. The Bruins were able to rally from a 14-point second-half deficit without their two best players, Jordan Adams and Kyle Anderson , who were suspended one game for violating team rules. "I don't know if I've been more proud than I am of this team," Coach Steve Alford said after UCLA fell to 21-7 overall, 10-5 in Pac-12 Conference play. The suspensions meant a much-longer-than-usual night for freshmen Bryce Alford and Zach LaVine , who replaced Adams and Anderson.

Southern California got some rain, but the drought continued for USC's basketball team as the Trojans dropped their ninth consecutive game Thursday night at the Galen Center, 76-66, against Oregon State. The Trojans made a second-half push, going on a 14-2 run late in the game to cut their deficit to 70-64 with a minute left. But the Trojans (10-18, 1-14 in Pac-12 Conference play) could not overcome a 37.3% shooting percentage and saw the Beavers improve to 15-12, 7-8. Oregon State led the entire game, starting with a 6-0 run before the Trojans' leading scorer, junior guard Byron Wesley, got USC on the board with a jump shot.

UCLA basketball Coach Steve Alford saw the bad habit form in practice. "You'd get a good hour, then the next 20 minutes you'd see the intensity drop," Alford said. The players noticed things weren't right in recent games against California and Oregon, but the Bruins won anyway. "It started on the defensive end, then we had trouble scoring," said point guard Kyle Anderson. It took a free fall during the 71-67 loss to Oregon State on Sunday before there was full acknowledgment of a problem.

CORVALLIS, Ore.  - What is said in the locker room, stays in the locker room … as a rule. But when the angry words seem to burst through brick and mortar, there was no way to ignore the significance. UCLA flat-out stunk Sunday. BOX SCORE: Oregon State 71, UCLA 67 Coach Steve Alford made that clear during a verbose 10-minute instant-review to his team following a 71-67 loss to Oregon State that denied the Bruins a chance to move closer to first-place Arizona in the Pac-12 Conference standings.
