If you don't like Mike Riley you don't like ice cream or dogs. The man who could have been USC's coach at least once has comfortably settled into Corvallis, Ore. He is 60 now and the Pac-12's longest tenured coach entering his 13th year. Riley played for tough-guy Bear Bryant at Alabama, but he is really more like a teddy bear. While other coaches become more paranoid, closing down ranks and shuttering doors, Riley welcomes everyone into his practices. Last year, after Oregon State beat UCLA at the Rose Bowl, Riley treated the entire team to In-N-Out burgers.

UCLA appears to be facing an Oregon State team chock-full of eager Beavers. Oregon State has played only once in three weeks, as its opener against Nicholls State postponed. The Beavers are coming off a bye week. “I love hitting people,” Oregon State defensive end Dylan Wynn told the Oregonian. “I love just being on the field and not getting in trouble for hitting people. The more away from it you are, the more you want it. " Oregon State manhandled Wisconsin, 10-7, in its only game.

Until a few weeks ago, USC's secondary was derided as perhaps the Trojans' weakest link. But going into next Saturday's game at California, the unit continues to show noteworthy improvement. USC defensive backs intercepted three passes Friday in the Trojans' 31-14 victory over Oregon State, which entered the game as college football's most productive passing offense. It was the second week in a row that USC picked off three passes, raising its season interception total to 13. The Trojans were ranked eighth nationally in interceptions going into Saturday's games.

Both UCLA and Oregon State are hoping to use this Pacific 12 Conference opener as a springboard -- or at least as an antidote for what's been ailing them. UCLA is still stinging from last week's 49-20 loss to Texas at the Rose Bowl. Oregon State had last Saturday off after being routed 35-0 at Wisconsin. Staff writer Chris Foster examines the game's issues and matchups: Gloom and doom Oregon State defensive tackle Kevin Frahm told the Oregonian newspaper this week, "The vultures are circling the carcass" in Corvallis.

It's one down and three to go for Oregon State. The Beavers, seeded third nationally, stayed alive in the College World Series on Monday, beating Louisville, 11-4, after a seven-run fourth inning broke open the game. Oregon State won national championships the last two times it played in Omaha, in 2006 and 2007, and Coach Pat Casey's first title team did it the hard way. The Beavers (51-12) face the same challenge as that 2006 team, having to win four straight games after losing their CWS opener to reach the best-of-three final.

On a night when the UCLA men's basketball team saw its season end, the women's team continued theirs — and inched ever closer to the NCAA Tournament. The Bruins crushed Oregon State, 60-44, Friday at the Galen Center in the quarterfinals of the State Farm Pac-10 women's tournament, advancing to Saturday's semifinal round against rival USC. UCLA's regular season record now stands at 23 wins and seven losses. To guarantee a spot in the NCAA Tournament, the Bruins would have to win this tournament, but head Coach Nikki Caldwell said they have already done enough.
