Seven OPEC nations will meet informally Sunday to discuss the Persian Gulf crisis that has tightened world oil supplies and sent crude prices soaring, Venezuela's president said Thursday. Oil ministers from a majority of the 13 nations making up the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries agreed to attend the talks in Vienna, the cartel's headquarters, Venezuelan President Carlos Andres Perez said.

President-elect Carlos Andres Perez flies to the Middle East today to confer with the rulers of Saudi Arabia, Kuwait and Algeria about ways to strengthen OPEC, officials said Wednesday. Perez will discuss "very precise ideas" about how to revitalize the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries, officials added. Venezuela is an OPEC member. Over the past few months, Perez has urged an OPEC summit to forge greater unity.
