There's something about the second half and New York Giants Coach Tom Coughlin that don't work out well. His teams have squandered playoff position the last two seasons, and have finished with a worse second-half mark than in the first half in all of Coughlin's seven seasons. After starting 6-2 and leading the NFC East, the Giants have lost narrowly at San Francisco and against division rival Philadelphia. Monday night, the Giants visit NFC South leader New Orleans and quarterback Drew Brees.

"Hello, Osi. Fancy meeting you here. " OK, so the exchange Sunday between Philadelphia running back LeSean McCoy and New York Giants defensive end Osi Umenyiora probably won't be that cordial. The two have quite a history. McCoy, who rushed for a combined 174 yards in 24 carries in two games against the Giants last season, tweeted in June that Umenyiora, who was in a contract dispute at the time, was "Overrated n soft 3rd best d-line on his team honestly. " In an interview with the Newark Star-Ledger, Umenyiora referred to McCoy as "Lady Gaga" and questioned his manhood.

New York Giants defensive end Mathias Kiwanuka will miss Sunday night's game against the Chicago Bears and possibly the entire season after tests revealed a bulging cervical disc in his neck. Kiwanuka, who leads the Giants with four sacks, practiced all week, but had an MRI on Thursday after complaining of a stiff neck. After Friday's practice, Kiwanuka was sent to the hospital where he had a CAT scan. Results of the tests revealed enough damage that the team is concerned Kiwanuka could miss the entire season, according to ESPN's Chris Mortensen . Kiwanuka will seek a second opinion and is hopeful injections in the disc could speed recovery and allow him to play this year, sources told Mortensen.

Two years ago, Osi Umenyiora stood alone. He was the only member of the 2007 New York Giants voted into the Pro Bowl, even though the team went on to shock New England in the Super Bowl. Today, Umenyiora is standing strong -- and that's news too. His 2008 season ended abruptly last August when he suffered a knee injury in an exhibition against the New York Jets, meaning the Giants were without a major weapon in their defensive arsenal. After all, it was Umenyiora, a defensive end, who collected 13 sacks two years ago, a club-record six of them in a game against Philadelphia.

Time, TV: 10 a.m. PST, Channel 11. Story line: The Buccaneers won the NFC South on the strength of a defense that led the NFC by giving up only 16.9 points and 278 yards a game. They were particularly strong against the pass, giving up an NFL-low 170.5 yards a game. That could cause problems for Giants quarterback Eli Manning, who has had an up-and-down season with 23 touchdowns and 20 interceptions. If Manning gets in trouble, the Giants will have to rely on a defense that led the league in sacks with 53. Michael Strahan, Osi Umenyiora and Justin Tuck will try to contain Tampa Bay quarterback Jeff Garcia, who had only four passes intercepted this season and who has twice defeated the Giants in the playoffs, in 2003 with the San Francisco 49ers and in 2007 with the Philadelphia Eagles.
