Steven Arvizu, who oversaw enrollment increases and the development of innovative educational programs, has announced his resignation as president of Oxnard College. Arvizu, 57, said health complications from an automobile accident in 1998 are forcing him to leave his post at the 25-year-old campus. The resignation is effective this week with the close of the fall semester. "I love my job . . . but my doctors have been urging me to put my health first," he said.

The Oxnard College women's soccer team took the field with dreams of dethroning a dynasty. Instead, Sarah Costello of Ventura College scored on a free kick in the 30th minute and Kelly Nash added a goal in the 48th minute to lift first-place Ventura to a 2-0 Western State Conference victory Tuesday at Oxnard College. Ventura (16-3-3, 10-2-1 in conference play) can clinch its fifth consecutive WSC title with a victory Friday over Hancock at Ventura.

The caretaker of a 14-month-old boy who died while in her custody was charged with murder and child neglect Monday, as prosecutors increased her bail to $1 million and her devastated relatives maintained her innocence. Looking pale and tired, Teresa Rodriguez, 20, leaned against a screened retaining window in Ventura County Superior Court during the brief afternoon hearing, as prosecutors postponed her arraignment until next Monday.

Representatives from more than 60 public and private colleges and universities will be on the Moorpark and Oxnard college campuses this week to provide students with information on transferring to four-year institutions. They will answer questions regarding admission requirements, degree programs, financial aid and housing. Moorpark College will host its event Monday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on the Campus Center Quad. The event moves to the clock tower quad at Oxnard College on Wednesday from 9 a.

* Gary Morgan, a professor at Oxnard College, was inducted into the Community College Journalism Hall of Fame during a recent national journalism conference in Phoenix. The Hall of Fame is sponsored and administered by the Community College Journalism Assn., an international organization of two-year schools. Morgan, who has taught journalism at Oxnard College since 1984, was the only inductee this year.

An Oxnard chiropractor has announced his plans to run for the Ventura County community college board. Kalani Gusman Jose said he will run for the 5th District trustee seat, representing Oxnard and Port Hueneme. The seat is being vacated by Pete Tafoya, who resigned in May after accepting a fellowship at National Defense University in Washington. Jose, 34, attended Oxnard College, where he started the Asian-Pacific Student Union and served in student government. He graduated with honors in 1994.

Police arrested a man early Thursday for threatening to beat up Mayor Manuel Lopez if the top elected Oxnard official did not approve a project that authorities said does not exist. Police arrested Robert Wayne Badiggo, 40, at his Oxnard home just before 7 a.m. and booked him on suspicion of threatening a public official and making lewd and annoying phone calls, said Det. Robert Coughlin of Oxnard's Violent Crimes Task Force.
