Three men were in custody Saturday for stealing a power boat from the Channel Islands Harbor in Oxnard, the Ventura County Sheriff's Department reported. David Amrose Rievas, 19, of Ventura; David Alexander Jeffreys, 22, of Port Hueneme; and Daniel Martin Gronvold, 21, of Oxnard were arrested shortly after 6 a.m., Sheriff's Lt. Joe Funchess said. The incident began when Channel Islands Harbor Police responded to a call about a vessel leaving the harbor without turning on its lights.

An Oxnard police officer on bicycle patrol sustained minor injuries after he was struck by a hit-and-run driver, authorities said Monday night. The officer, who was patrolling with a partner, was rear-ended by the driver about 6:30 p.m. in the 100 block of South H Street, the Oxnard Police Department said. The driver fled south on H Street and then was seen headed west on 2nd Street, police said. The car was described as a green late-1990s Hyundai or similar four-door vehicle and was damaged in front.

When a man high on methamphetamine died in June after a brief struggle with Oxnard police officers, the department said officers were trying to restrain him for paramedics. But a Ventura County medical examiner's report released this week called the death of 26-year-old Robert Ramirez a homicide. At her attorney's office, Teresa Ramirez, the man's mother, was on the verge of tears Wednesday as she spoke of her son's death outside an Oxnard home. "I personally knocked on every door," she told reporters.

A man found dead in a burned car in Irvine last week may have committed suicide, police said. The coroner is conducting toxicology tests and attempting to determine the cause of death. The process could take several weeks, said Lt. Julia Engen, spokeswoman for the Irvine Police Department. "We're investigating the possibility of a suicide," she said, adding that police don't suspect foul play. A jogger found the body of the man about 9:20 a.m. Wednesday near Michelson Drive and Harvard Avenue when he saw a car partially submerged in the San Diego Creek, according to police.

Oxnard police on Sunday were investigating a series of fights that left four Oxnard residents with stab wounds and two others with minor injuries. A number of the men attended a party in the 2900 block of Sturgis Road, police said. Fights erupted over several hours after the party broke up about 3 a.m. Suffering multiple stab wounds were Samuel Avila, 25; Omar Jasso, 23; Aaron Flores, 23; and Luis Lomelli, 21. None of the injuries were listed as life-threatening.

Police were searching Friday for an Oxnard man suspected of stabbing another man in the heart after the victim tried to protect his girlfriend from the assailant. Louie Ramos Gutierrez, 25, is suspected of stabbing Allen Obiols, 27, once in the chest at 11 p.m. Wednesday after confronting Obiols' girlfriend on Wolff Street, Oxnard police said. Obiols was taken to St. John's Regional Medical Center in Oxnard, where he underwent surgery.

An Oxnard police officer was struck with a pipe late Monday after he stopped a car in the city's La Colonia neighborhood, a Police Department spokesman said. Police said that one of the occupants of the car whacked the officer in the knees with a pipe, and the officer, who was not identified, was taken to St. John's Regional Medical Center. Police were looking for suspects, the spokesman said. Authorities did not elaborate on the officer's condition.

In an effort to combat street crime, Oxnard police arrested 19 people during a weekend crackdown that targeted areas with heavy gang activities, authorities said. The department's Safe Streets Project began on Saturday night when nine officers made four felony arrests and 15 misdemeanor arrests. Officers also issued 17 citations for traffic infractions and other violations of city ordinances, police said.

Oxnard police nabbed three suspected drunk drivers and arrested a motorist allegedly traveling with a loaded firearm during the department's 10th sobriety checkpoint, police said Saturday. Staged on Pleasant Valley Road near C Street, the checkpoint screened 746 vehicles between 7 p.m. Friday and 2 a.m. Saturday. In addition to the drunk driving arrests, officers cited 20 drivers for license violations and towed 13 vehicles belonging to impaired or unlicensed drivers.

An Oxnard police officer pleaded not guilty Friday in Ventura County Municipal Court to charges that he kicked a suspect in the head as another officer attempted to handcuff the man. Officer Kenneth Dellinger is charged with one count of assault for allegedly kicking Guillermo Hernandez, 20, on Sept. 13. The incident occurred after Hernandez and two other suspects were apprehended near the scene of a convenience store robbery, according to police reports.

A police traffic stop in Long Beach turned deadly Tuesday morning when the driver bailed from the car and ran off, ultimately ending when he was fatally shot by officers on a rooftop. The suspect died at the scene,  KABC-TV reported. The incident began about 2:30 a.m., when police tried to pull over a car near Third Street and Walnut Avenue, KABC-TV reported. The driver of the car leapt out and ran off, leaving two passengers inside the vehicle. The two people who stayed behind identified the driver for the officers, KABC reported.

A man and woman were arrested in connection with the forcing of a 15-year-old girl into prostitution, Oxnard police said. Rolando Navarrete Ramirez, 34, and Graciela Vasquez, 23, were taken into custody at a home in Oxnard where the victim was forced to perform "sexual acts with older men," Oxnard Police Department officials said in a statement. "It was also determined that sexual acts had occurred between the victim and suspect Ramirez," police said. Officers found 10 other children ranging in age from 5 months to 13 years at the home in 100 block of North Harrison Avenue.

A man who allegedly led Oxnard police and Ventura County sheriff's deputies on a high-speed chase and rolling gun battle before they shot and wounded him Monday night had a brother shot and killed by police under similar circumstances in 2006, his sister said Wednesday. Isabel Valdivia said she spoke with her brother by phone Monday night during the chase, then watched in shock as he drove by her house with more than a dozen police cars and a helicopter in pursuit. Her brother, Augustine Medina, 46, a drywaller and lifelong Oxnard resident, is now in a Ventura hospital with two gunshot wounds to the head.

You know it's going to be a bad day when it's barely dawn and you're already being chased by police officers, firefighters, three rifle-toting game wardens and a news helicopter, and you're stuck up a tree — in a cemetery, no less. That's the predicament a California black bear faced Tuesday after somehow taking a very wrong turn out of a forest and ending up in a three-hour standoff with authorities in Oxnard. The wayward but intrepid black bear was first spotted around 2:15 a.m., lurking around a fire station on Vineyard Avenue.

When former Olympic shot-putter David Laut was gunned down outside his Oxnard home last year, his wife told police he was killed by prowlers. But the case took a surprising twist over the weekend when Jane Laut was arrested on suspicion of shooting her husband, and her attorney alleged that she had been a longtime victim of domestic abuse. Jane Laut, 52, was taken into custody Saturday and remains in Ventura County Jail in lieu of $3-million bond, said her attorney, Ron Bamieh.

An Oxnard junior high student who was shot in the head by a classmate earlier this week was declared brain dead Wednesday, and the 14-year-old male suspect now faces a first-degree murder charge, authorities said. Lawrence King, 15, was declared brain dead by two neurosurgeons about 2 p.m. at St. John's Regional Medical Center in Oxnard, said Craig Stevens, senior deputy Ventura County medical examiner. King's body remains on a ventilator for possible organ donation, he said.

Oxnard police shut down a tobacco shop this week and arrested its owner on suspicion of selling illegal weapons and operating illegal video-style slot machines at the store. Tobacco King owner Paul Kwon, 63, of Chatsworth was arrested about 3 p.m. Thursday at his business in the 800 block of Ventura Road, said David Keith, spokesman for the Police Department. A tip from a neighborhood resident alerted police to the activity at the smoke shop, Keith said.
