While awaiting the next development in Dan Gurney's creation of a Toyota-powered Eagle Indy car, P.J. Jones is carving quite a name for himself in NASCAR's new Craftsman SuperTruck series. Jones, who along with Juan Fangio is one of Gurney's test drivers, will drive a Die Hard Chevy C-1500 pickup owned by Scoop Vessels and Darryl Guiducci when the SuperTrucks race Saturday night at Saugus Speedway in what promises to be the biggest event at the Santa Clarita track in its 56-year history.

By the time Parnelli Jones' sons, P.J. and Page, get to the Indianapolis 500--as they probably will--they won't lack for experience. P.J., 22, and Page, 19, already have been pegged as two of the most talented and versatile young racers in the country. Perhaps the only reason they may not get to Indy is that they may be in the Daytona 500 first. "Dad is pushing NASCAR because he says there are more opportunities in stock cars," P.J. Jones said.

"I just want to cry," Parnelli Jones said, and a moment later tears welled in the eyes of the legendary race car driver Thursday. The tears were for veteran driver Jason Leffler, a Long Beach native who died Wednesday night from injuries in a sprint-car racing crash in New Jersey. He was 37 and left behind a 5-year-old son, Charlie. As tributes from the racing community poured in for Leffler, who also raced in all three of NASCAR's national series, his death was acutely felt at Jones' race shop in Torrance.

Pro know-how prevailed Saturday in the pro-celebrity race at the Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach. P.J. Jones, son of former Indianapolis 500 winner Parnelli Jones and touted as a rising star on the road-racing scene, took advantage of amateur errors and drove to an easy victory in the 10-lap event. Another pro, off-road racer Rod Millen, finished second, and even the celebrity winner, third-place finisher Joe Amato, drives cars for a living.

Juan Fangio II broke the track qualifying record with a lap of 103.98 m.p.h., and teammate P.J. Jones was nearly as fast with a lap of 103.89, to gain front-row positions for today's Miami Grand Prix.
