Senior Tom Warde scored five goals to lead UC Irvine's water polo team to an 8-7 victory over No. 3 ranked Stanford Saturday to advance to the championship game of the NCAA tournament in Indianapolis. The Anteaters (26-6) will play top-ranked California tonight for the title. The Bears defeated Pepperdine, 10-9, in their semifinal game, Irvine took a 2-0 lead, on goals by sophomore Skylar Putman and freshman Pablo Yrizar.

UC Irvine's water polo team, ranked second in the nation, ran its record to 8-1 by winning its three matches Saturday at the Air Force Academy tournament in Colorado Springs. The Anteaters opened play in the round-robin tournament with a 15-12 victory over Pepperdine. Seniors Tom Warde and Julian Harvey scored five and four goals respectively to pace UC Irvine. Warde added six goals and freshman Pablo Yrizar contributed four in a 14-9 victory over the Air Force in the team's second match.

UC Irvine, ranked third in the nation, defeated No. 1 Stanford, 9-7, in the UC Irvine Invitational water polo tournament Friday at Heritage Park. Sophomore Skylar Putman scored with four minutes and 20 seconds left in the quarter to break a 6-6 tie. Senior Julian Harvey put Irvine ahead, 8-6, when he scored with 2:53 left. Stanford scored to pull within one, but freshman Pablo Yrizar scored his third goal of the game with three seconds remaining. Irvine goalie Chris Duplanty had 15 saves.

UC Irvine defeated Stanford, 12-9, in a nonconference water polo game between two of the top five ranked teams in the nation Friday in Palo Alto. Skylar Putman had three goals for fourth-ranked Irvine (6-1), which opened a 6-1 lead at the half. Pablo Yrizar, Steve Gill, Steve Froning and Kurt Edler scored two each for Irvine, which plays top-ranked California today. No. 5-ranked Stanford is 3-4.

Continuing a midseason streak, UC Irvine, ranked fifth in the nation in water polo, defeated No. 6 UCLA, 9-6, in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation match Tuesday at Sunset Canyon Pool in Westwood. Kevin Leinbach, a senior from Tustin High, scored three goals for the Anteaters (9-6), who have won six in a row and seven of their past eight matches. UCLA's Scott Turner scored his second goal with 1 minute 17 seconds left to narrow the Anteaters' lead to 7-6.

Randy Lake, a senior on the UC Irvine sailing team, won the Intercollegiate Yacht Racing Assn. Singlehanded National Championship Sunday at in New London, Conn. Lake trailed by two points going into the final race, but won it and took the overall title with 76 points. Competitors took part in 16 round-robin races in Lasers.

Steve Gill's three fourth-quarter goals broke a tie and gave UC Irvine a 9-6 victory over USC Saturday in the quarterfinals of the 49er Invitational water polo tournament in Long Beach. Gill finished with a game-high six goals. The Anteaters (15-3) will face Stanford (10-8), an 8-7 winner over UCLA, in a semifinal at 11:30 a.m. today at Belmont Plaza Pool. Irvine beat the Cardinal, 12-9, Sept. 27.
