Mexican teams Veracruz and Monterrey qualified for Sunday's Interliga finals by defeating Morelia and tying Pachuca, respectively, in a Wednesday night doubleheader at the Home Depot Center. They will be joined in the final four by Chivas de Guadalajara and the UANL Tigres, who advanced Tuesday night.

A battle between police and gunmen has left 12 people dead in the central Mexico city of Pachuca, officials said. The dead comprise three police officers and nine gunmen, said Hidalgo state Atty. Gen. Jose Alberto Rodriguez. Two state police officers and one city officer remained hospitalized after suffering gunshot wounds Thursday. The Hidalgo state police director, Donanciano Millan, said officers acting on a tip stopped four trucks carrying the gunmen, who opened fire.

Manchester United will face "unprecedented repercussions" if the English Premier League champion goes to court to challenge the eight-month ban and $87,000 fine imposed on defender Rio Ferdinand for missing a drug test, Joseph "Sepp" Blatter, FIFA's president, warned Sunday. The club is appealing the ban imposed by the English Football Assn., and Coach Alex Ferguson has said Manchester United would back Ferdinand all the way.

United that qualified it for the second FIFA World Club Championship in Spain this summer, the Galaxy goes back to work today. Coach Sigi Schmid's team plays Olimpia of Honduras at 1 p.m. at the Coliseum in the title game of the CONCACAF Champions Cup, the club championship for teams in the North and Central American and Caribbean region. Does it mean anything?

TORONTO -- The Galaxy will play D.C. United in the semifinals of soccer's SuperLiga tournament at 7 p.m. on Aug. 15 at the Home Depot Center. That pairing was confirmed Wednesday night when the eight-team tournament's final two first-round games were played. At Robertson Stadium in Houston, the Dynamo defeated D.C. United, 1-0, in front of 11,013 on a 50th-minute goal by U.S. national team forward Brian Ching. The victory earned Houston first place in Group B.
