A City Council member representing the beach areas called Tuesday for a ban on alcohol on local beaches after a Labor Day brawl at Pacific Beach led to 22 arrests on suspicion of fighting and public intoxication. Councilman Kevin Faulconer said he wants the current ban at La Jolla to be extended to Pacific Beach, Ocean Beach and Mission Beach. Police in riot gear broke up a fight among dozens of young men Monday. In 2002, voters narrowly defeated a proposed ban on alcohol on beaches.

The Goodwill store on Garnet Avenue is a sign of the times in the beachfront community of Pacific Beach. The once-drab yellow exterior has been painted a bright white, and the old sign has been replaced with a crisp, stylized logo in white and blue. The "junkier things" that used to fill the front window have been replaced by more attractive merchandise and "the place is now much more organized," according to store manager Raul Gloria.

Roger Sing Ip, accused of killing a 15-year-old La Jolla boy July 10 after a traffic altercation, turned himself in Thursday afternoon in a San Diego courtroom. A judge set his bail at $1 million. The appearance in Municipal Court of Ip, 33, a Pacific Beach restaurateur who had not been seen since the incident and was believed to have fled to Los Angeles, was arranged by his attorney, Elisabeth Semel. Semel would not explain Ip's presence or his whereabouts for the last two weeks.
