Herman Nash is his name, and the 44-year-old former Manual Arts running back has earned a special place in the history of West Hollywood Pacific Hills basketball. He took over running the team on the night of March 2, after Pacific Hills defeated Brentwood in the Southern Section 4A final and head Coach Ivan Barahona left to coach the El Salvador national team. With Nash directing practices and making decisions on the sideline, Pacific Hills went through the gantlet of the CIF Southern California Division IV playoffs, knocking off powerhouses La Verne Lutheran, Gardena Serra and Torrance Bishop Montgomery to earn a spot in Saturday's state championship game in Sacramento.

The Pacific Hills boys' basketball team, for the first time in three weeks, did not have to work overtime to win a championship, as the Bruins defeated Stockton Christian, 69-52, Saturday in the state Division V final at Arco Arena. It was the first state title for the Bruins, and they did it without the drama of their Southern Section and state regional finals. But this one was no less satisfying. "If you wrote a book about destiny, I guess this is it," Pacific Hills Coach John Bobich said.

If anyone wants to know how much high school basketball has changed in the last decade, all you need to do is take a trip to watch one of the ambitious small private school teams and you'd be impressed by the immense talent on the court. It no longer matters how small a school is; all it takes is a few good players, and the team can compete against anyone. That's the case with Los Angeles Windward and Pacific Hills, which met Tuesday night in an Alpha League showdown featuring plenty of future college players.

Back in the good ol' boom days of 1988, the San Diego real estate company Home Capital Corp. bought 416 acres of undeveloped land from the Mission Viejo Co. Plans were to build 1,500 homes on the property, located between the Oso and Marguerite parkways. But since then, the real estate market has collapsed and Home Capital's parent company, Home Federal Savings of San Diego, has seen a lot of the loans it made to developers go sour.

At various times Thursday night, Campbell Hall High played at its peak and at its worst in a Southern Regional Division V semifinal against Pacific Hills. Unfortunately for the Vikings, the worst came in the final minutes. Senior forward Danny Brummel hit a 10-foot bank shot as the buzzer sounded to give Pacific Hills a 44-42 victory at Occidental College. Campbell Hall, the Southern Section Division V-AA champion, did not score in the final 4:33, blowing a nine-point lead.

The boys' basketball faithful from Pacific Hills High in West Hollywood gathered at Brentwood High on Tuesday night for an opening-round state tournament game. Brentwood wasn't the school's opponent, however. It was Reedley Immanuel, from near Fresno. But the gathering could have taken place at any number of gyms, because Pacific Hills doesn't have its own and plays at neighboring schools' when it hosts a game. The Bruins often play home games at Daniel Murphy High or West Los Angeles College.
