Delma Corp., the parent of Pacifica Hospital, said it promoted Barbara J. Foster to chief executive of the hospital. She succeeds George Mack, who resigned recently. Foster, 43, joined the 217-bed hospital two years ago as vice president of patient care services. The company said Foster has been key to the hospital's plan to secure managed care contracts by providing more outpatient services, which are cheaper than inpatient care.

Tiara Leon, a respiratory therapist at Pacifica Hospital of the Valley, was excited when she was handed her paycheck in early December. "I was rubbing my hands together, licking my lips," said Leon, who had not taken any vacation or sick days in the 12 months before her Dec. 2 anniversary date and was expecting to be paid for them in a lump sum, which is hospital policy. "I was planning on getting about $4,000 clear," she said.

Pacifica Hospital in Huntington Beach, whose owner is being sought for allegedly stealing as much as $4 million from the hospital chain he founded, has been bought by a newly formed investor group. Thomas J. Broderick, president of the hospital's new owner, Pacifica Care Center Inc., said he hopes that the 103-bed facility can build a solid reputation as a local hospital. Pacifica Hospital was one of five community hospitals owned and operated by now-defunct Affiliated Medical Enterprises Ltd.

Pacifica Hospital of the Valley, Sun Valley, and Valley Economic Development Center, Pacoima, are joining forces to provide work experience for Pacoima residents who cannot find work due to lack of employment history or skills. Billed as on-the-job learning, the program provides training for entry-level jobs, a uniform and one meal a day, but no wages. Medical billing, records, and other clerical job training is available.

Unable to make money, owners of the 98-bed Pacifica Hospital in Huntington Beach abruptly shut its emergency room at noon Tuesday and said they would close the hospital completely on Monday. About 325 full-time and part-time employees will lose their jobs, and about 40 patients will be transferred to other hospitals, Pacifica officials said. Neither employees nor patients had warning of the closing. Many workers were shocked and embittered.

Orange County developer Robert J. Zinngrabe has filed for Bankruptcy Court protection in an effort to resolve financial problems affecting his multimillion-dollar empire of care facilities and homes for the elderly. The bankruptcy filings indicate that some of Zinngrabe's operations have developed cash-flow problems, including his 98-bed Pacifica Hospital in Huntington Beach.

A Lake View Terrace woman has been arrested on felony manslaughter charges after her mini-van collided with a motorcycle, killing the passenger and seriously injuring its driver, police said. Los Angeles Police Officer Mel Scholl said Sheila Jones, 31, sped away after her van struck a motorcycle driven by Martin Mejia, 19, of Pacoima while turning left onto Paxton Street from Bradley Avenue in Pacoima. Mejia's passenger, Juan Torres, 25, of Pacoima was killed in the Friday night accident.

I am writing to provide your readers with further insight as to the profound impact that the "Every Fifteen Minutes" program--part of which was conducted at Pacifica Hospital in Huntington Beach in conjunction with the Huntington Beach Police and Fire departments and the Westminster and Huntington Beach high schools--had on our clinical staff in the emergency room.

Ateen-ager was slightly injured Friday in a drive-by shooting across the street from a high school in Sun Valley, Los Angeles police reported. The 15-year-old boy was struck in the arm by a bullet while in the parking lot of a fast-food restaurant at Roscoe Boulevard and Whitsett Avenue, police said. The 3 p.m. shooting took place across the street from John H. Francis Polytechnic High School shortly after classes ended for the day. Police later arrested a juvenile suspect in the case, who was being held for questioning.
