Key: Green Bay led, 30-10, in the fourth quarter but nearly blew its lead. The Packers might have lost two key players on defense: outside linebacker Aaron Kampman and cornerback Al Harris, who suffered potentially serious knee injuries. Packers said: "It's fun to play against a team that you idolized growing up, and watched every Sunday after church." -- Aaron Rodgers, quarterback, a native of Chico, Calif. 49ers said: "We have to settle down; our young guys have to settle down and play football."

The NFL released its 2014 schedule Wednesday evening, revealing that Seattle will play host to Green Bay in the Thursday kickoff opener. That's a rematch of the controversial “Fail Mary” game in 2012, when replacement officials awarded the Seahawks the winning touchdown on a Hail Mary throw that appeared to be intercepted in the end zone by Green Bay. In Week 3, Seattle plays host to Denver, the team it beat in Super Bowl XLVIII in February....

Who knew it would be only one day after New England Patriots linebacker Brandon Spikes ( @BrandonSpikes55 ) tweeted, "Can someone please tell these [expletive] zebras foot locker called and they're needed Back at work!!!! #BreakingPoint" that the breaking point for many players and fans alike would strike? If you happened to miss the end of Monday night's game between the Packers and Seahawks, all you really need to know is that a 24-yard touchdown catch by Seahawks receiver Golden Tate on a last-second Hail Mary pass from rookie quarterback Russell Wilson wasn't a touchdown.

Picking up where they left off in February, the two teams in Super Bowl XLVIII, Seattle and Denver, open the 2014 NFL season with blockbuster games. The league released its schedule Wednesday, revealing the defending champion Seahawks will play host to Green Bay in the opener Thursday, Sept. 4, and Indianapolis will play at the Broncos in the opening Sunday night game. Packers-Seahawks is a rematch of a 2012 "Fail Mary" game won by Seattle on the final play, a controversial touchdown pass that from every camera angle looked to be an interception by Green Bay. Replacement officials called it a touchdown for the Seahawks, however, and that game proved to be the final straw that ended the officiating lockout.

What a boomerang of a few years it has been for Matt Flynn. The former Green Bay backup quarterback has re-signed with the Packers after a series of false starts with Seattle, Oakland and Buffalo. Flynn will back up Scott Tolzien, a promoted practice-squad player who was bumped up because of injuries to starter Aaron Rodgers and backup Seneca Wallace. In his previous go-round with the Packers, Flynn backed up Rodgers and won a Super Bowl ring after the 2010 season. He caught the eye of other teams that season when he threw for 480 yards and six touchdowns in a Week 16 game against Detroit.

Apparently there are a lot of Green Bay fans out there waiting for the Packers to retire Brett Favre's jersey number, even though he didn't leave the team on the best of terms and eventually ended up playing for hated rival Minnesota Vikings. Well, for you fanatics out there, we have good news and bad news. The good news is that it's looking more and more likely that Favre will in fact receive the honor you feel he deserves. The bad news is you may have to do something to help the circulation in your extremities, because that feeling of pins and needles may last awhile.

Story line: Detroit has lost 20 consecutive games at Lambeau Field, and given where the team's at mentally - following a fourth-quarter collapse against the Indianapolis Colts last week - there's not cause for an upset. Green Bay quarterback Aaron Rodgers is 7-1 against the Lions, and the loss came when he was sidelined a concussion in 2010. The outcome probably will be decided by Rodgers, considering the Packers' ineffective run game and their offensive line missing two starters.

Back when he was an assistant coach for the Packers, Steve Mariucci used to combat the cold during games by holding quarterback meetings in the sauna. [Sam is checking whether this is still true, but he may not find out in time for deadline. ac] Both teams could certainly use that dash of comfort Sunday, when the temperature is expected to dip well below zero. Thermometer aside, the 49ers have been torrid lately, finishing the regular season with an NFL-best six-game winning streak.

Two NFL players violated league protocol on dealing with concussions in last weekend's wild-card playoff games, according to a document obtained by the Associated Press. The document was a letter sent by the chairmen of the NFL's head, neck and spine committee to all team doctors and trainers. In the letter, Drs. Hunt Batjer and Richard Ellenbogen say one player re-entered a game after suffering a possible concussion and another refused to leave the sideline. Although the letter doesn't identify the players, the AP said they were Green Bay tackle David Bakhtiari and New Orleans cornerback Keenan Lewis.

GREEN BAY, Wis. - Phil Dawson will turn 39 years old later this month. He's at the tail end of his 15th season. And after spending 14 years in Cleveland with the Browns, the San Francisco 49ers kicker isn't exactly accustomed to the postseason stage. So on Sunday, when his big moment arrived, he made sure to appreciate the opportunity more than fear the pressure. Three seconds remained. A 33-yard field-goal attempt awaited to break a 20-20 tie and beat the Green Bay Packers in the opening round of the playoffs.

Will an Arctic chill play into the weather-worn hands of the Green Bay Packers? Not necessarily. The forecast calls for bitter cold Sunday afternoon when the Packers play host to San Francisco in the first round of the NFL playoffs, but that doesn't necessarily mean Green Bay will have an advantage on the famed Frozen Tundra. According to Packers.com, Green Bay is 3-4 in games played at Lambeau Field when the temperature at kickoff is 6 degrees or lower. Sunday's forecast is staggeringly cold - a high of minus-3 and a low of minus-19.

Welcome to Stunned Diego. Not even the most optimistic of Chargers could have realistically predicted what unfolded Sunday, the final day of the NFL regular season, when left-for-dead San Diego somehow found its way into the playoffs. A month ago, the Chargers were 5-7 and roundly written off. Then came a four-game winning streak culminated by a season sweep of the Chiefs. "It's been an unreal ride this year," Chargers quarterback Philip Rivers said in a postgame interview with CBS, his voice cracking.

Heisman Trophy, meet Lombardi Trophy. That would be rookie running back and Heisman winner Mark Ingram vs. Green Bay's defense, and you didn't need to remind the rollicking crowd at Lambeau Field on Thursday who won that showdown. With no time on the clock -- because Ingram's first-and-goal run from the one came after regulation had expired -- the Packers swarmed and stuffed him, securing a 42-34 victory. "It's tough when you do make it all the way down there and you aren't able to punch it in," said Saints quarterback Drew Brees, whose team got one last gasp because of a pass-interference call on the Packers on the last play of regulation.

The Cleveland Browns have yet to say who will start at quarterback for them Sunday. Same goes for the Minnesota Vikings and Green Bay Packers. As for the Philadelphia Eagles? Coach Chip Kelly, tongue firmly planted in cheek, said Monday that Nick Foles will be "the starting quarterback for the next 1,000 years here. " What Kelly was really saying is Foles has played well enough to lock down the job for the moment, but the coach doesn't feel the need to designate anyone a bulletproof starter.
