They fought their hearts out on the court. They encountered adversity, aggression, animosity. When things were darkest, however, they battled hardest. They hitched up their baggy trunks and refused to give up. Fortitude? They had it. Guts? They had it. Pride? They had it. Antagonistic crowds on the road? They had 'em. But they wouldn't buckle, wouldn't cave, wouldn't be intimidated, and next year they'll be back. Bank on it.

I love a parade. On a morning so sweet you could almost drink it -- indeed, on a day in danger of fermenting -- the Lakers poured down Figueroa Street on Wednesday, surrounded by fans seduced by two months of torment, chutzpah and miracle finishes. "Kobe!" they screamed, as if a savior had arrived. "Kobeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!" They came by car. They came by train. They watched from rooftops and atop bus-stop shelters. In a lousy economy, they ditched work.

Ron Deaton may have been the only Lakers fan who was relieved Sunday, when the hometown team lost the third game of the NBA finals to Indiana. Deaton, of course, wants the Lakers to win. But as the city's chief legislative analyst and the City Council's top problem solver, he has the suddenly unenviable task of planning the team's victory parade--something that has to be done, even though the series' outcome remains uncertain.

Eight months, 6,000 miles and a dramatic chapter of history removed from the student uprising it helped to inspire in Beijing, the Goddess of Democracy is in the middle of a controversy that is dividing the Chinese community in Los Angeles. Fearing that it would provoke dissent among local Chinese, the Chinese Chamber of Commerce banned a float featuring a six-foot replica of the statue from the Chinese New Year's parade it is sponsoring today in Chinatown.

It was a classic scene: A police chief and an Olympic champion in '55 Thunderbird convertibles chugging slowly down Van Nuys Boulevard under a bright-blue late autumn sky. The parade, the 29th consecutive to celebrate Christmas in Pacoima, attracted 4,000 spectators Saturday. Organizers called it the largest ever. LAPD Chief Willie L. Williams said the festivities in the tiny, proud community reminded him of similar events back home in Philadelphia.

Bettye Moore made sure the girls practiced their steps every day for four months. Sometimes she had to prod them. Saturday morning all that work paid off as 30 girls--members of the San Fernando Gardens Project Drill Team--marched and danced along Van Nuys Boulevard as part of the Pacoima Christmas Parade. Even after reaching the end of the route at the David M. Gonzalez Recreation Center, the girls continued dancing to the sound of Will Smith's "Wild Wild West" blaring from their boombox.

It was a day--and night--for parade lovers to savor Sunday as two familiar Yuletide processions lighted up the streets of Hollywood and the Eastside. The 62nd annual Hollywood Christmas Parade attracted hundreds of thousands of spectators beneath a soon-to-eclipse full moon. Earlier in the day, the 19th annual East L.A. Christmas Fantasy Parade had mixed the brass of marching bands with the brass of mariachis. Organizers estimated that between 750,000 and 1 million people lined the 3.
