November 30, 2008 | Richard Eder, Eder, a former Times book critic, was awarded a Pulitzer Prize for criticism in 1987.
Lust, Sloth, Anger, Gluttony, Greed, Envy and Pride drifted frowning through early Christian tradition until the 6th century, when Pope Gregory the Great codified them as the seven deadly sins. They did not of themselves mean damnation -- that depended on how seriously they were practiced -- but they staked out the perilous paths that could lead to it. They also provided artists and writers with material more colorful than theology usually makes available.

Re the Pencil Guy: Please explain to Valerie C. Barnett (Letters, May 5) that there is no skulduggery being brewed by Calendar's editors. The head bone merely depicts the metaphoric symbolism associated with the quality of some of the letters received. Having said that, a new icon would be nice. MILTON B. SUCHIN Valley Village Don Gold and Robert Kiviat's letter (May 5) contains an astounding charge that "no credible scientist, researcher or effects wizard has presented any real evidence to refute the alien footage" in their "Alien Autopsy: Fact or Fiction?"

It becomes obvious to assume that Powers has not read "The Financing of Terror" by James Adams. Powers writes an excellent introduction and description of terrorism. He even astutely brings out that the key to terrorism is money. From here on he rapidly goes downhill and ends on a note of the ridiculous. Unlike Adams, he does not bring out the apparent deduction which calls for the curtailment of terrorism by reducing the means by which it can flourish. Personnel, planning, airline tickets, team training, hotel rooms, safe houses, communications, arms, rockets, explosives, electronic devices of all kinds, rental cars, and other types of transportation are just a partial list of what expenses can be for one terrorist excursion which may easily run up to $1 million or more.

"Babel" Pro: Voters may finally discover artsy director Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu, thanks to an A-list cast and a timely message about irrational hysteria over terrorism. Con: Older academy members may balk at "Babel's" violence and avant-garde interweaving of four globe-scattered stories. "Blood Diamond" Pro: Slick entertainment with political message. DiCaprio really sparkles. Con: Looks like an action film, so may not be taken seriously.

Re "City Council Deals a Blow to Leaf Blowers," May 15: Never mind that leaf blowers were relatively rare until the L.A. City Council ruled it unlawful to use water to clean sidewalks during the last drought. Of course, droughts are gone forever. Right? What Los Angeles needs is more laws on the books that will not be enforced. A partial list includes: the prohibition against parking cars on lawns; cars blocking sidewalks; permit parking restrictions (never mind that residents pay $15 a year to support the program)
