Pasadena Police Chief Bernard K. Melekian will become president of the Los Angeles County Police Chiefs Assn. Jan. 2. Melekian, Pasadena's police chief since 1996, will take over an organization that is hoping to establish a higher profile and become the third leg of law enforcement in the county, alongside the Los Angeles Police Department and Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department. A former Santa Monica police captain, Melekian rose through that city's ranks.
